Wednesday's high school results: Barberton boys basketball defeats CVCA in showdown of league champs

WEDNESDAY'S BOYS BASKETBALL HIGHLIGHTS

Barberton forward De'Arion Holley shoots over Revere's Uriah Pulliam in the first half, Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2024.
Barberton forward De'Arion Holley shoots over Revere's Uriah Pulliam in the first half, Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2024.
  • BARBERTON 49, CVCA 47 Junior De’Arion Holley made a jumper off a pass from senior Mike Jones with 3.2 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter Wednesday night to give the host Magics (19-3) a win over the Royals (20-2) in a meeting of league champions.

  • Holley scored all of his eight points in the final five minutes after he felt discomfort in a knee during the first two minutes of the game. He also had five rebounds, three assists, two steals and two blocks in about 15 to 16 minutes instead of his usual 28 to 30 minutes.

  • “Our whole team stepped up very well,” Holley said. “The bench came in and did really well. Credit to Mike Jones, Cory Martin, Xzavier Macon and Mark Tavanello. I was able to come in and score when it mattered.”

  • Senior Robert Davis totaled nine points, six rebounds and three assists for Barberton, the Suburban League American Conference champion. Davis did a celebratory cartwheel and backflip near midcourt after CVCA missed an off-balance shot as time expired.

  • “We played well,” Davis said. “De’Arion Holley made a clutch mid-range jumper to get us the win. That team is a nice team. We all came to play today as a team.”

  • Barberton junior Kameryn Kennerly had nine points and three blocks. Magics junior Kardiay Tyler finished with eight points, four rebounds, three assists and four steals. Jones had seven points, eight rebounds, four steals and three assists and senior Kenny Larry scored four points.

  • “This was a big game,” Kennerly said. “They are a really good team, but we knew that we could come in and win this game today. I feel like everybody played their role. The starters played well and the bench played well. This is a big win.”

  • Added Tyler: “We played way harder as the game progressed, diving on the ground, hustling and getting physical. ... We were all on the same page as a team.”

  • Senior LaVelle Sharp Jr. scored 15 points and had four assists to pace CVCA, the Principals Athletic Conference champion. Junior Niles Nuru scored 10 points and sophomore Charley Levak had eight points, five assists and two steals.

CVCA guard LaVelle Sharpe Jr., right, drives to the basket against Ellet's Aramis Dunn during the first half of a high school basketball game, Friday, Feb. 9, 2024, in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio.
  • “This felt like a playoff game,” Barberton coach Chad Hazard said. “These are two teams that have talented players and have won close games. You don’t go 20-2 without being really a united unit. They are well coached. They have really high IQ players. Their guard play is really good. LaVelle Sharp Jr. is a stud. Niles Nuru and Charley Levak are good. They are tough. They play hard.

  • “It was an evenly matched game. It was kind of a coin flip. It could have gone either way, obviously. This is a great game to play at this point in the season because there is nothing to lose for either team. You are trying to gear up for the playoffs and you need a game like this. This was a complete team effort for us.”

  • CVCA coach Matt Futch said the game was agreed to after each team had an open date.

  • “The game was what it was designed for,” Futch said. “When we found out that Northside Christian canceled, I immediately looked at [assistant] coach Jack Greynolds Jr. and said, ‘Do you think Barberton will play?’ I knew they were looking for a game and it worked out.

  • “... This was a great situation for us. They played physical and they played tough. Being off for over a week, we didn’t play our style and at our pace that we would like to play, but it was good for our guys to have this type of outcome because now you can’t have this outcome next week and going forward. This is a quality opponent.”

  • Futch added that Barberton has “done a total 360” after being winless last season.

  • “They have confidence in each other,” Futch said of Barberton. “With them playing tough, that is going to help us going into the playoffs.”
