Caitlyn Holmes breaks Akron Ellet girls basketball scoring record in OHSAA sectional final
Caitlyn Holmes checked two boxes in one fell swoop Thursday night.
Holmes led the Ellet girls basketball team to its second consecutive Division I sectional championship with a 56-33 win over visiting Avon and broke her team's all-time scoring record in the process.
A junior guard and Kent State University commit, Holmes scored 26 points to reach 1,256 career points, one more than the previous record holder, former Ellet and Ball State star Markita Griffin-Roberts.
The record had stood since Griffin-Roberts finished her Ellet career in 1995 as the Beacon Journal Player of the Year and a first-team All-Ohio guard. Griffin-Roberts attended Ellet's victory over Avon and notified the Beacon Journal about Holmes' achievement, texting afterward, "She did it!!"
Ellet (17-6) advanced to face top-seeded Archbishop Hoban (18-3) in a district semifinal at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Ravenna High School.
With a sectional title at stake Thursday night, Hoban routed Parma Heights Valley Forge 65-12.

In the regular season, Ellet fell 49-45 to visiting Hoban on Dec. 13.
Holmes now needs 30 points to tie and 31 to break Ellet's all-time scoring record among both girls and boys basketball players. A.J. Gareri, a 2017 Ellet graduate, holds the record with 1,286 career points.
