Harry Kane is the league’s top scorer on 21 goals but can he improve his tally in his next three against top six opposition?
Harry Kane is the league’s top scorer on 21 goals but can he improve his tally in his next three against top six opposition?

The Tottenham striker is known for his goals but has struggled in the past against the top six.

Tottenham’s next three Premier League fixtures consist of an away trip to Anfield sandwiched between two home ties against Manchester United and Arsenal. For Harry Kane, this provides an opportunity to improve on one of the few weak aspects of his game- his goalscoring record against the top six.

In the past three seasons, Kane has found the net 12 times in 23 games against the top six giving him a goalscoring record of 0.52 per game. For a man with 21 Premier League goals in 23 games this season, this ratio of one goal roughly every two games is not fantastic.

His season average is currently 0.91 per game, showing there is a remarkable drop off when facing the top six and he has only scored more than once against the top six on one occasion in the past three years. Kane does not want to develop a reputation of not being able to do it against the big teams.

Kane vs Kun

Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero is a player who enjoys a positive reputation when it comes to scoring against the top six but statistics show that in the last three seasons, the Argentine has scored 11 goals in 21 games against the league’s finest giving him a ratio of 0.52 per game, the same as Kane.

The arrival of Gabriel Jesus and Pep Guardiola’s tendency to play the young Brazilian over Aguero when possible has hampered the playing time of City’s number 10 and his record has suffered as a result.

The Argentine gets the better of Spurs when the league’s top two strikers go toe-to-toe. Aguero has scored 10 in 12 league games and assisted another two against the Lilywhites. Kane meanwhile has scored twice and made another in six games against City.

Giant killer

Interestingly, one man who enjoys a great record against the top six is Jamie Vardy. In the same time period as Aguero and Kane, Vardy scored an incredible 21 goals in 32 games. His ratio is 0.65 goals per game, 0.13 better than his City and Spurs counterpart.

Kane has also struggled on the road. This season, he has only scored two goals in four games against the top six, both of which came at home to Liverpool. It is a counting trend, as in the 16/17 season, he only scored one away goal against the top six all season and in the year prior he managed just three against the same opponents.

Kane’s two goals this campaign both came in Spurs’ 4-1 demolition of Jugren Klopp’s Liverpool at Wembley. While in the 16/17, he only scored one away goal against the big six all season and in the year prior he managed just three against the same opponents.

Mauricio Pochettino will be hoping Kane produces a similar performance when the sides meet in a few weeks and will ask his players to look for the striker as much as possible in order to escape Liverpool’s high press.

In the 16/17 season, Sergio Aguero faced a similarly difficult fixture list as he played Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea consecutively. City’s all time top scorer netted three times in as many games, two of which saved City from defeat. Kane will be hoping he can be as influential in the upcoming fixtures.

Given that Spurs’ tricky three game run is shortly followed by an away trip to Juventus in the Champions League, Kane and his manager will be hoping the Englishman is in fine goalscoring form and not suffering from a similar top six goalscoring drought.

Kane’s form leading up to these fixtures has been good, scoring three league goals in his previous two games and as we are heading towards the business end of the season, Spurs can not afford for their star player to go off the boil. If he does, they can practically wave goodbye to their top four ambitions.
