Trevor Lawrence's ManningCast appearance: Subjects included donkeys, hair and Waffle House

It was hard for Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence to upstage the first guest on "ManningCast" on Monday night.

After all, he didn't have a donkey.

Lawrence appeared during the second quarter of Monday's game between the Los Angeles Chargers and the New York Jets, at East Rutherford, N.J., on the show starring brothers and former NFL quarterbacks Peyton and Eli Manning on ESPN2, which is a simulcast of the ESPN broadcast.

The Manning brothers mix analysis of the game with barbs aimed at each other and random thoughts that pop into their heads.

The guests have been as varied as former President Barack Obama to rapper Snoop Dogg and actor Will Ferrell. On Monday, Lawrence followed actor and former California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.

For reasons that went unexplained, Schwarzenegger had a donkey in his living room and was feeding it when he came on. The only reference the brothers made is when Eli Manning remarked to his brother, "That looks like you eating."

He later asked Schwarzenegger, "Is the donkey named Peyton?"

Talk turns to hair, Dukes and Waffle House

Lawrence didn't have any props and his appearance had its moments of awkward pauses, as if he was hesitant to break into the brotherly banter between the Mannings.

There were two comic moments: the producers put up a photo of the long-haired Lawrence that had been doctored to look like Peyton Manning's receding hairline (the favor was returned in the second half, with a photoshop of Peyton Manning with long hair), then an entry was made for a Trevor Lawrence lookalike contest, with a photo of Guidobaldo da Montefeltro, the Italian Duke of Urbino from 1482-1508.

Montefeltro has an uncanny resemblance to Lawrence and he was a leader of sorts, serving as a captain in a mercenary army that fought for Pope Alexander VI.

Lawrence didn't quite know what to say when he saw his photo with short hair other than, “Oh, my God ... that's brutal.”

He also didn't bite when a photo of him with his hair flowing was put alongside Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert and Peyton asked him who had better hair.

Lawrence replied, "I'm not going to say anything that can be used against me."

Aside from that, the Manning brothers grilled Lawrence on leading the Jaguars' comeback in the playoffs against the Chargers last year and his manner of celebrating: the now-famous trip with around 20 teammates and their wives and girlfriends to the Jacksonville Beach Waffle House.

Peyton Manning asked, "Do you feel like you've made it in life when you can get a reservation at 1 a.m. at a Waffle House in Jacksonville?"

Lawrence merely smiled, praised the Waffle House manager for accommodating their party, and said, "Good memories."

Lawrence makes quick rally from London comment

Lawrence was also asked about his tweet two weeks ago in response to the national media's criticism of the Jags, which said: "Keep your opinions and we'll keep finding ways to win."

Eli Manning asked, "What did Peyton say to make you so angry?"

Lawrence said the team was in a good place coming off the bye week with a 6-2 record, and ready to face the San Francisco 49ers (5-3) on Sunday at EverBank Stadium (1 p.m., FOX-30).

"I'm excited ... it's been a fun year so far," Lawrence said. "We're on a hot streak [and] just trying to stay on track."

Lawrence also said in response to a question Peyton Manning posed about the Jaguars being "London's team."

"I love being London's team," said Lawrence, who led the Jags to two victories in back-to-back weeks there.

Perhaps realizing that it played into numerous national media narratives over the years that the Jaguars would move to London, Lawrence quickly recovered.

"I love being Jacksonville's team," he said. "It's a great city. It was cool playing over there [in London]. It's a great trip but I love being Jacksonville's team."

Yes, a Jaguar can beat a horse

Peyton Manning also got something off his chest.

During a promotional YouTube video before the start of ManningCast's third season, Lawrence was among a list of stars from football, other sports and entertainment who had mock auditions with the Manning brothers. Lawrence was asked by Peyton Manning (who played for two NFL teams with equine nicknames, the Colts and Broncos), "Can a Jaguar beat a horse?"

When Lawrence hesitated, Peyton upped the ante, "Can a Jaguar beat a giant?"

Lawrence said in the video, "Well, a giant is a mythical creature."

He then asked the brothers, "Is this what you think about all the time?

They looked at each other and nodded yes.

Peyton Manning asked Lawrence the question again on Monday.

"A Jaguar can beat a horse ... definitely," Lawrence said. "Is that better?"

"I disagree," Manning said. "At least you answered."

Lawrence the first Jaguar on the show

Lawrence was the first active NFL player to appear on ManningCast this season and he's the first Jaguars to ever be invited as a guest.

Former Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers was on the show earlier this season but he's on the Jets' injured list.

Others to appear on the show this season have been former NFL quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, NBA star Klay Thompson, tennis legend John McEnroe, talk-show host Jimmy Kimmel and actors Will Ferrell and Tiffany Haddish.

Peyton, Omaha Productions have won two Emmys

ManningCast has won two Sports Emmys, for Omaha Productions for Outstanding Live Sports Series and for Peyton Manning for Outstanding Sports Personality.

Omaha Sports also produces alternative telecasts for college football, NBA, golf and the UFC.

The company serves as executive producer on NFL Honors and ESPN+’s Places franchise featuring series from the Manning brothers, Abby Wambach, Vince Carter, David Ortiz, Ronda Rousey, P.K. Subban, Sue Bird and John McEnroe.
