Postgame recap: Trevor Lawrence hurt, Jacksonville Jaguars lose to Bengals in OT Monday

Is Jacksonville ready for some Monday Night Football? The First Coast has had a dozen years to wait.

The Jacksonville Jaguars kick off their first Monday Night Football game since 2011, taking on the Cincinnati Bengals at EverBank Stadium. Kickoff will be 8:15 p.m. Keep scrolling for updates, and remember to refresh the page to stay up-to-speed.

After defeating the Houston Texans last Sunday, the Jaguars now hold a two-game lead in the AFC South and turn their attention to a potential high playoff seed. Trevor Lawrence neared his career high in yardage against Houston, and Josh Allen continued his superb season with two and a half sacks. But a knee injury to left tackle Cam Robinson has jolted the offensive line.

The Bengals' hopes have come crashing down with a season-ending wrist injury to quarterback Joe Burrow amid a three-game losing streak. Former University of Washington quarterback Jake Browning started last week's loss to the Steelers.

Rookie Parker Washington comes through for the Jaguars after injury to Christian Kirk

Parker Washington was sorely needed by the Jacksonville Jaguars on offense in Monday night's loss against the Cincinnati Bengals after Christian Kirk went down in the first quarter with a groin injury.

Washington, a sixth-round draft pick from Penn State, came through, especially on his first NFL touchdown in the third quarter and a clutch fumble recovery to preserve a drive that ended in Brandon McManus' game-tying field goal. - Garry Smits

Who Dey'd: Bengals defeat Jaguars on MNF, back in the mix for postseason contention

It took serious concentration for Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase late in the game as he bobbled a pass into the air. But circus catches are nothing new for the third-year playmaker, bouncing the ball from hand to hand before reeling it in to keep Cincinnati’s drive alive. - Juston Lewis

Gene Frenette: Losing Trevor Lawrence, Christian Kirk adds to Jaguars' nightmare of overtime loss to Bengals

Of all the disasters that have befallen the Jacksonville Jaguars’ franchise in its 29-year history, they can only hope what transpired on a Monday Night Football stage against the Cincinnati Bengals doesn’t end up being a season-killer.

What began as one of the most highly-anticipated events in Jaguars history — a chance to seize the top AFC playoff seed position and show a national television audience that it’s a bona fide Super Bowl contender — disintegrated into a real-life nightmare.  - Gene Frenette

Jaguars lose Trevor Lawrence to ankle injury, fall to Bengals 34-31 in overtime on MNF

The Jacksonville Jaguars (8-4) entered Monday night with aspirations of being the No. 1 seed in the AFC, but are now faced with uncertainty.

Favored by 10 in the lead-up to the game with Cincinnati, the Jaguars lost to the Bengals 34-31 in overtime, a game that saw their starting quarterback, Trevor Lawrence, leave the game with an ankle injury. Bengals kicker Evan McPherson kicked a 48-yard field goal to win the game with just under 2 minutes remaining in overtime. - Demetrius Harvey

Report: Jaguars QB Trevor Lawrence's initial diagnosis is ankle sprain

As reported by Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, the early diagnosis on the fourth-quarter injury to Trevor Lawrence is an ankle sprain.

It's not yet clear how much time Lawrence may miss as a result of the injury. - Clayton Freeman

Field goal Bengals: Evan McPherson 48-yarder beats Jaguars. Final: Bengals 34, Jaguars 31

This time the Cincinnati kicker doesn't miss. Right down the middle. The Jaguars lose a painful game in more ways than one, allowing 354 yards (32 of 37) to Bengals backup Jake Browning, and the big question now is the status of Trevor Lawrence. - Clayton Freeman

Bengals' Joe Mixon rushes for first down, ball near 30

The Jaguars' hopes are fading fast. With two and a half minutes to go, the Bengals are now in range for an Evan McPherson field goal. The kicker already has one game-winning kick against the Jaguars on September 2021. - Clayton Freeman

Tee Higgins catch from Jake Browning crosses midfield, Bengals near field goal range

Jake Browning is now above 340 yards. On third down, he finds Tee Higgins across midfield, three plays after an improbable juggling catch by Ja'Marr Chase. Cincinnati is near the 40. Tied 31-31, 3:15 to go. A Bengals field goal would end it. - Clayton Freeman

Holding on Anton Harrison nullifies Calvin Ridley catch at 2

C.J. Beathard almost had a highlight-reel play to Calvin Ridley at the 2, with the receiver jumping high for the catch. But holding on Anton Harrison leaves the Jags with third and a mile, and another pass to Ridley lost yardage. The Jaguars will punt with about five minutes left in overtime. - Clayton Freeman

Travis Etienne takes pitch across midfield, Jaguars moving in OT

A good start for the Jaguars. C.J. Beathard converted a third down to Evan Engram and Travis Etienne then took a pitch around right end. Jaguars and Bengals tied 31-31, under 8 minutes to go in OT. - Clayton Freeman

Overtime coin toss: Jaguars win toss and will receive in OT, C.J. Beathard and offense at work

The Jaguars will get the ball first, beginning on their own 25. Reminder: In 28-plus years of football, the Jacksonville Jaguars have never played a game that ended in a tie. Trevor Lawrence has not returned from his injury. - Clayton Freeman

END OF REGULATION: Jaguars 31, Bengals 31

Heading to OT. - Clayton Freeman

Field goal Jaguars: Brandon McManus ties game on 40-yarder after Trevor Lawrence injury

Crazy game continues. C.J. Beathard got sacked on third down and the timeout-less Jaguars had to scramble the kicking unit onto the field. but the Bengals burned a timeout to try to get the ball back. Brandon McManus didn't miss this time, good from 40 yards.

Jaguars 31, Bengals 31, 0:26 4th. - Clayton Freeman

Travis Etienne catch-and-run advances Jaguars inside field goal range

Can C.J. Beathard lead the comeback? The Jaguars are inside the 35 after a catch-and-run by Travis Etienne and then another catch by Parker Washington. Less than a minute to go. Bengals lead Jaguars 31-28. - Clayton Freeman

Two-minute warning: Bengals 31, Jaguars 28

Here's what fans need to know about C.J. Beathard. - Garry Smits

Field goal Bengals: Evan McPherson boots Cincinnati into lead with 54-yard kick. Can C.J. Beathard lead comeback?

Evan McPherson, the former Florida Gator, converted a 54-yard field goal after Jake Browning's short toss brought Cincinnati back into field goal range. With Trevor Lawrence in the X-ray room, as reported by ESPN, it's C.J. Beathard time. Lawrence is officially listed as questionable with an ankle injury and Walker Little also injured a hamstring on the same possession.

Bengals 31, Jaguars 28, 2:28 4th. - Clayton Freeman

Josh Allen steps up with sack, forces Bengals back near midfield

The defense needed that, especially with Trevor Lawrence's injury. A Josh Allen sack pushed the Bengals outside field goal range. Score tied, 2:35 to go. Bengals have third and 22. - Clayton Freeman

Field goal no good: Brandon McManus misses wide right after Trevor Lawrence injury

The Jaguars have lost their quarterback and they lost a chance at points. Brandon McManus missed wide right from 48 yards. Jake Browning goes to work with the score 28-28, 4:59 left. Video on ESPN shows Trevor Lawrence moving with significant assistance inside the bowels of EverBank Stadium. - Clayton Freeman

Injury watch: Trevor Lawrence hurt, stepped on by Walker Little. C.J. Beathard time?

This isn't good. The Jaguars have already lost Tre Herndon and Christian Kirk in this game, and Folorunso Fatukasi is also now in the injury tent. Now, an even bigger worry: Trevor Lawrence had his leg stepped on by Walker Little, who was attempting a pass block. Lawrence went down in pain and threw his helmet. When play resumes, the Jaguars will have fourth down and a likely field goal try. - Clayton Freeman

Touchdown Bengals: Jake Browning ties game on sneak

Cincinnati makes the short field pay off. Again, Jake Browning has been smooth and efficient, leading that offense in a drive that chewed up more than five minutes. Ja'Marr Chase dropped a possible touchdown on third down but converted anyway on fourth down, and Browning scored on a sneak three plays later.

Jaguars 28, Bengals 28, 9:27 4th. - Clayton Freeman

Jaguars go three-and-out after Trevor Lawrence overthrows Zay Jones

An unsuccessful possession there for the Jaguars. The Jags had third and 3 from their own 16 but moved backward after consecutive pre-snap penalties, and Trevor Lawrence then overthrew Zay Jones deep on third down. Logan Cooke's punt barely crossed midfield and the Bengals take over in Jacksonville territory. Jaguars 28, Bengals 21, 14:43 4th. - Clayton Freeman

END OF THIRD QUARTER: Jaguars 28, Bengals 21

Heading down to the final quarter at the Bank. - Clayton Freeman

Jaguars' defense makes stand, survives Parker Washington muff

Yikes. For the first time in a while, the Jaguars' defense made a stand, although not before Cincinnati topped the 100-yard rushing mark with a long rush across midfield. Then, when the Bengals did punt, Parker Washington muffed it but fell on the loose ball at the Jacksonville 9. Almost a disaster for the Jags, with less than a minute to go until the end of the third quarter. - Clayton Freeman

Touchdown Jaguars: Trevor Lawrence sneaks in on fourth down, Jags regain lead

That was close... but in. After Cincinnati stuffed Travis Etienne on third and goal from the 1, Doug Pederson kept the offense on the field, and Trevor Lawrence reached the ball across the goal line on the sneak. Josh Allen's pick made that happen.

Jaguars 28, Bengals 21, 3:10 3rd. - Clayton Freeman

Interception: Josh Allen picks off disastrous Bengals double pass

What was that? The Jaguars are officially in business. The Bengals lost big yardage on an ugly first-half double pass and this one was even worse. Tyler Boyd's throw launched directly into the hands of Josh Allen and the Jaguars' edge rusher returned the football to the Cincinnati 9 with 5 minutes left in the quarter.

Big play on D for the Jags. - Clayton Freeman

Touchdown Jaguars: Parker Washington catches acrobatic TD in back of end zone from Trevor Lawrence

Did Parker Washington catch this ball? It was almost intercepted on third down, but the rookie juggled the ball and appeared to bring it down in the back of the end zone. After a look, it's ruled GOOD. Washington also made a terrific catch at the 15 to advance the ball inside the red zone. With Christian Kirk out of action, the rookie from Penn State is having a major night on Monday Night Football. He's made his first, second, third and fourth career receptions in this game.

Touchdown Bengals: Ja'Marr Chase beats Tyson Campbell deep, catches Jake Browning pass for 76-yard score

It's getting worse for the Jags, and again, Cincinnati makes the big play on third down. Ja'Marr Chase beats Tyson Campbell with pure speed down the left sideline, Jake Browning puts it on the money and the Bengals' star wideout is gone, 76 yards. The Jaguars are going to have to come from behind on Monday Night Football.

Bengals 21, Jaguars 14, 11:50 3rd. - Clayton Freeman

Third-down woes continue for Jaguars: Travis Etienne is stuffed

Not a good possession for the Jaguars, now 1 of 5 on third down. Parker Washington was tackled short of the chains on second down, and on third and inches, the Bengals stuffed Travis Etienne. That's a three-and-out and a punt. The Bengals get it back with the score tied 14-14, 13:21 3rd. - Clayton Freeman

Second-half kickoff: Parker Washington returns ball beyond Jaguars' 30

It's third quarter time. Can the Jaguars find a rhythm after the break? - Clayton Freeman

Drought is over: Evan Engram finally penetrates the end zone for the Jaguars after 15 games, 86 catches

The drought is over for Jacksonville Jaguars tight end Evan Engram.

Engram has done everything for the Jaguars this season except actually score a touchdown. Entering Monday's game against the Cincinnati Bengals at EverBank Field, he had caught 64 passes this season for 524 yards, serving, as usual, as an effective third-down receiver, the guy the Jaguars depended on to move the chains. - Garry Smits

HALFTIME: Bengals 14, Jaguars 14

The Jaguars are in a battle on Monday Night Football at the Bank. - Clayton Freeman

Jaguars' drive ends after miscue on snap, Bengals get ball back following Calvin Ridley drop

Ouch. The Jags came close on that one, when Calvin Ridley beat the Bengals on a double move and got open deep. But Trevor Lawrence had to rush after a miscue on the snap, and although his off-balance deep throw was catchable, the ball fell through Ridley's hands. That could've been a big play... instead, a punt. Jaguars 14, Bengals 14, 0:22 2nd. - Clayton Freeman

Touchdown Bengals: Joe Mixon breaks in untouched from 2 yards

Cincinnati isn't encountering much resistance on these drives, and the Jaguars' lead is gone. Once again, Jake Browning guided the Bengals' offense with short to mid-range passes, and the Jaguars are struggling on both the pass rush and in tackling. Joe Mixon ended the drive with a 2-yard dive up the middle.

Bengals 14, Jaguars 14, 1:04 2nd. - Clayton Freeman

Two-minute warning: Jake Browning leads Bengals into scoring range

This is steady, composed quarterback play from Jake Browning, who has marched Cincinnati into the red zone before the halftime break. Browning has completed 16 of 18 for 167 yards so far. The Jaguars' secondary was previously missing Andre Cisco and is still missing Tre Herndon, both injured in the first half. - Clayton Freeman

Touchdown Jaguars: Evan Engram flies high into end zone off Trevor Lawrence pass

You'll see that one in the highlights. Evan Engram takes a short pass from Trevor Lawrence on the left side and takes flight, soaring nearly 5 yards into the air inside the pylon to score. The Jags set that up with a quality drive, including an off-tackle run by Travis Etienne and a strike from Lawrence to Calvin Ridley on the right sideline.

Jaguars 14, Bengals 7, 6:24 2nd. - Clayton Freeman

Touchdown Bengals: Joe Mixon caps 92-yard Cincinnati drive; Jake Browning is 12 of 13 early

Not a good drive for the Jaguars' defense. Jake Browning is making things look easy right now, completing 12 of 13 passes for 125 yards, and he's also throwing more downfield. Trenton Irwin, Tanner Hudson and Tee Higgins made key catches on that possession, and Ja'Marr Chase is already up to six receptions against a Jags defense that has missed nearly a half-dozen tackles already. Joe Mixon ended the march with a 6-yard rush, again bulldozing through a tackle before the end zone.

That's the end of a speedy opening quarter at the Bank. - Clayton Freeman

Jaguars go three-and-out from near midfield

With Christian Kirk missing and questionable to return due to a groin injury, the Jaguars' offense didn't click on that possession despite nice field position. Logan Cooke's punt pins Cincinnati inside its own 10. The Jags lead 7-0, 1:16 1st. - Clayton Freeman

Missed field goal: Bengals' Evan McPherson misses off crossbar from 57 yards

What are the odds? For the second consecutive week, the Jaguars benefit when an opposing field goal, this one a 57-yard try by Cincinnati's Evan McPherson, clanks off the crossbar and drops short. That also happened last week against Houston. The miss ends a Cincinnati possession marred by a few Jaguars missed tackle, but the Bengals lost yardage back on a bizarre double pass that ended with QB Jake Browning getting crunched. The Jags still lead 7-0, 2:13 1st. - Clayton Freeman

Touchdown Jaguars: Travis Etienne takes option pitch for score, Jags strike first

Injury concerns notwithstanding, it's a good start on offense for the Jags. After Trevor Lawrence converted a fourth-and-short, Travis Etienne took an option pitch around right end for a 6-yard touchdown and a quick Jaguars lead on Monday Night Football.

Jaguars 7, Bengals 0, 6:51 1st. - Clayton Freeman

Injury watch: Jaguars wide receiver Christian Kirk

This is worrying for the Jags. The Bengals appeared to bust a coverage on first down and Trevor Lawrence found a wide-open Christian Kirk at the 20, but the receiver fell hard on his left side without contact after the reception. Trainers are taking a look at the injured receiver. - Clayton Freeman

Sacksonville: Josh Allen, Travon Walker sack Jake Browning on fourth down, Jaguars force turnover on downs

A good start for the Jacksonville defense. Cincinnati drove across midfield, assisted by a facemask penalty on Roy Robertson-Harris, but the Jaguars stood firm afterward. Darious Williams made a key third-down tackle to stop the Bengals short of the chains, and on fourth down, the pocket collapsed and Josh Allen and Travon Walker combined to down quarterback Jake Browning. The sack stats keep climbing for Allen, and the Jags take over near the midfield stripe with no score and 10:36 left in the first quarter. - Clayton Freeman

The Jaguars had a Monday kind of love: Jags won their first five MNF games in team history

The first one remains the best one for the Jacksonville Jaguars.

It took the NFL three seasons to put the Jaguars on a Monday night game and on a humid September night in 1997, they produced a victory for the ages: Chris Hudson's 58-yard return of a blocked Norm Johnson field-goal attempt on the final play of the game to preserve a 30-21 victory.

Gene Frenette: As Taylor brothers call plays in Jaguars-Bengals game, matchup tough on family

When their sons had separate stints playing quarterback at Norman (Okla.) High and Butler Community College in Kansas, it was much easier for Sherwood and Julie Taylor to cheer on from the stands without so many conflicting emotions.

“Cheering for one son at a time is pretty good,” said Sherwood. “This is tough.”
