How transfer Kenny Jordan led Stewarts Creek football to a win over Blackman

SMYRNA − Stewarts Creek went to its newest weapon for a 7-yard gain on the first play of Friday night's football game against visiting Blackman.

And Kenny Jordan only got better from there.

Playing in his first game at Stewarts Creek after transferring from Pulaski Academy in Little Rock, Arkansas, The 6-foot, 185-pound senior wide receiver had three receptions for 55 yards and a touchdown and ran four times for 94 yards and another TD in the Red Hawks' 28-21 win.

"It was a great debut," Jordan said. "I was happy to get out here and help the team. Some guys went down, others stepped up, and I was happy to step up and do what I do best ... get the ball in my hands and get me in space."

One of those players who went down was Stewarts Creek star senior running back Javarian Otey with what appeared to be an ankle injury midway through the first quarter. Otey didn't return.

Jordan enrolled at Stewarts Creek two weeks ago and spent that time getting acclimated before debuting with the Red Hawks (2-0).

He is coming off a massive junior season with Pulaski Academy, having rushed for 1,725 yards and 20 touchdowns and hauling in 63 receptions for 864 yards and 11 TDs for the high-powered Bruins offense.

"He's done a great job, coming in and working hard," said Stewarts Creek offensive coordinator Les Greer, who was acting head coach Friday with Ben Caudill serving a one-day suspension after allowing volunteer assistant coaches to practice with the team without school board approval.

"He's a great kid and he fits in our culture well," Greer said. "He's very smart and does all the little things right. He's a great asset to our program."

Jordan has area ties, having lived in Nashville before moving to Arkansas during his sixth-grade year while his mother attended law school. He said he wanted to come back and finish high school in the area, so his family moved back and he enrolled where his cousin, Jerry Taylor, plays for the Red Hawks.

"What better way than to end it than coming to his school," said Jordan, who also has been a part of Nashville's Elite 3 Foundation football program for several years. "They've never won a state championship. I'm going to try to help them get one."

Jordan has several Ivy League offers, including Yale, Brown, Princeton (where he's taken an official visit), Penn and Colgate. He also has offers from Army West Point, Mercer, Missouri State and UT Martin among others.

"My parents always instilled in me that with student-athlete, the student comes first," said Jordan on his Ivy League offers. "I've always focused on that first. I maintain a 4.0 GPA for the most part. I just let my work on the field do its due diligence. And here we are."

Greer said Otey, who scored a rushing touchdown early before exiting the game, would be evaluated in the coming days, but had no other information on his status.
