Track and field: Four local grads win titles, 28 earn points at SUNYAC meet

Four Varsity 845 athletes claimed championships, 10 were top-three medalists and 28 top-eight scoring places were achieved at the SUNY Athletic Conference track and field championships held at SUNY Oneonta on Friday and Saturday.

The titles were won by Pine Bush grad Miles Moliterni, Wallkill’s Richard Samuels, Cornwall’s Isabella Fabrizio and Monroe-Woodbury’s Rachel Hirschkind.

Moliterni, a senior at Oneonta, threw the hammer 175 feet, 1.75 inches – he ranks third in the conference with a best of 178-6.

Samuels, a grad student at Cortland, won the 800 meters in 1 minute, 51.92 seconds, a personal best and No. 1 mark in the conference. He cut 0.95 seconds off his previous best set a week earlier at the Paul Kaiser Classic. Samuels was also on the Red Dragons’ 1,600 relay squad that placed second.

Fabrizio, a junior at Oneonta, won the shot put with a throw of 43-8.25; she currently leads the SUNYAC with a toss of 44-6.25 set at the Bison Classic on April 14. Fabrizio was also sixth in the hammer (148-7.25) and 14th in the discus (100-11).

Hirschkind, a junior at Geneseo, won the 3,000 steeplechase in 10:41.21; her SUNYAC-leading best time is 10:22.51 set at the Penn Relays a week earlier. Hirschkind also placed fifth in the 5,000 (18:10.31); again, she leads the conference at 16:48.99.

Marlboro grad Amarian Hughes, a junior at Cortland, was runner-up in the triple jump at 48-7; he ranks No. 2 in the SUNYAC at 49-10. He was also sixth in the long jump.

Warwick grad Dane Sorensen, a senior at Cortland, took third in the pole vault with a season-best 15-5, good for a fourth ranking in the SUNYAC; he jumped a foot higher during indoor season.

Kingston grad Clara Sensini placed third in the 400 meters with a season-best 58.24 (cutting 0.81 seconds), the No. 4 mark in the conference this season. Sensini also was on Brockport’s silver-medal 1,600 relay.

Pine Bush grad AnJalyna Talmadge, a junior at Cortland, placed third in the heptathlon with 3,910 points.

Cornwall grad Charles Cypress, a freshman at Plattsburgh, took fourth in the 100 meters.

Monroe-Woodbury grad Ella DePhillips, a junior at Oneonta, placed fourth in the 1,500 meters. Schoolmate Yasmine Peralta is a freshman on Cortland’s fourth-place 1,600 relay.
