Which track and field athletes stood out at Saturday's sunny North East Invitational?

NORTH EAST — They’d sought this type of setting for weeks.

A picturesque sky overlooked the 28th annual North East track and field invitational, a welcomed shift in weather for teams that had previously endured two-plus weeks of cold and rain. North East’s star student-athletes shined, but Seneca stood out most at this year’s meet, the Bobcats impressing across boys and girls competition.

Spring scoreboard: District 10 baseball, softball, track, more results for May 1-6

“We’ve done what I would call ‘old school’ training. We’ve hit the roads and done some hill workouts, which I don’t think they were used to, and on the long-distance side we’ve done some sprint workouts to challenge them. We’ve spent a lot of time on technique, especially with our hurdlers.”

Three Bobcats won multiple events Saturday. The meet does not crown a team champion, but with the District 10 meet two weeks away, Saturday was encouraging for first-year varsity coach Kim Paris’ group.

Seneca High School freshman Angel Troutman won the girls long jump during the North East Track & Field Invitational in North East on Saturday.

Seneca headliners

Ashley Post topped all competitors Saturday by winning three girls events, including the 800-meter run (2 minutes, 34.38 seconds), 1600-meter run (5:36.85) and running a leg on the winning 3200-meter relay (10:32.38).

Angel Troutman won the girls’ 100 hurdles in 16.48 seconds and tied with Isabella Wood of McDowell at 15 feet 7 inches to top the long jump podium. Ryan Miller, meanwhile, swept the boys’ 110 hurdles (16.00) and 300 hurdles (41.72).

Seneca High School senior Ryan Miller wins a boys 110-meter hurdle preliminary race during the North East Track & Field Invitational in North East on Saturday. Miller later won the event finals race.

Troutman, a freshman, and Miller, a senior, are experiencing Seneca’s emergence on opposite ends of their career. Both, however, are among those fueling it.

Clutch efforts: Erie County's Top Performers in high school sports include winning times, distances, more for May 1-6

“We’ve been putting in the work since even before the season started,” Miller said. “Everyone here wants to win and that just goes to show the culture at Seneca.”

Seneca was equally impactful in the throws, sweeping shot put and discus while also claiming the first, second and third-place finishes in the latter.

“We have a running club in elementary school and then our middle school track team, so it’s such a group effort,” Paris said. “We have a great group of kids now but, all the way up through, the passion is there, which is super exciting. You’re seeing the fruits of that labor — it’s a long-term investment and our school district has been extremely supportive of that.”

Setting a high standard

North East’s boys 3200 relay team had nothing to be ashamed of.

Lucas Boyd, Aivan Vargas, Riley Kordes and Kameron Chadsey breezed through their shared event in 8:19.51, nearly 50 seconds ahead of runner-up Seneca. Their post-meet disappointment, however, stemmed from a time set by Titusville in 2012.

This team, which has posted times this season among the state’s best in Class 2A, hoped to break its home meet record. While they fell short of their 8:12.38 goal, they enjoyed a long-awaited opportunity to race in ideal conditions.

“That group of kids worked hard all winter long,” said North East coach Dick Gregg, who applauded the day as a prime chance for district and state-qualifying finishes. “They’ll be at the state meet looking for medals, who knows which one.”

North East High School junior Jamari Curlett, top, wins the boys 100-meter dash during the North East Track & Field Invitational.

Chadsey also won the 800 in 2:06.60 to double. Jamari Curlett added two wins of his own for North East, claiming the boys 100 in 11.22 seconds and teaming up with Mikeal Banaag, Landon Kelly and Jackson Humes to win the 400 relay in 46.12.

Chloe Yazembiak of Northwestern was the meet’s only other double winner, sweeping the girls sprints. The junior won the 100 in 13.56 seconds and the 200 in 28.40.

Signings/commitments: Erie-area high school athletes are signing letters of intent this spring. Where are they going?
