Tourney time: 10 tournaments to watch this winter season in Franklin County

The winter sports season is here with action set to begin this week.

The season often brings many tournaments and invitationals, combining teams from the county, state and beyond to create special and exciting weekends.

There's a fair share of those events in Franklin County and beyond this year, so here's a look at 10 across basketball, wrestling and swimming to mark on your calendars.

Cumberland Valley Kickoff Classic (Dec. 1-2)

The wrestling season kicks off this Friday featuring some big-time schools from the Mid-Penn.

Shippensburg is the lone representative from Franklin County a part of the 23-team tournament.

In terms of the conference, the Greyhounds will compete with the likes of the Eagles, Boiling Springs, Northern and West Perry, among others. Plus there’s plenty of talented programs from around the state competing.

Greencastle-Antrim Boys Tip-off Tournament (Dec. 1-2)

Two Franklin County basketball squads get the season started this Friday in Greencastle against out-of-conference opponents.

First, James Buchanan takes on Mifflin County at 5 p.m., followed by the Blue Devils facing Hanover. Then the winners and losers will face-off on Saturday.

Greencastle made the postseason a year ago, and this weekend will show what it has in store this season.

James Buchanan Girls Tip-off Tournament (Dec. 1-2)

The Rockets and Blue Devil girls will also share the tournament stage this weekend, this time in Mercersburg.

James Buchanan will face Southern Huntingdon County at 5 p.m., followed by Greencastle taking on Mifflin County. The winners and losers will face-off on Saturday.

Both the Rockets and Blue Devils have been strong teams in recent years, but may be entering a transitional season. A good first test this weekend.

Northern Tip-off Tournament (Dec. 1-2)

This Friday will see two local girls teams going at it at Northern, as Chambersburg takes on Shippensburg at 8 p.m.

East Pennsboro takes on Northern in the other game, with the winners and losers taking the court on Saturday.

The Greyhound hope to begin another run back to the postseason after qualifying a year ago.

Franklin County Vs. Tournament (Dec. 8-9)

Waynesboro hosts a marquee tournament with four teams who made the postseason a year ago, two of which from Franklin County.

Chambersburg takes on Warwick Friday at 6:30 p.m., followed by Waynesboro taking on Bishop McDevitt.

Then on Saturday the two Franklin County teams will take on the other out-of-town squad.

It’ll be interesting to see how the Indians and Trojans handle the tough competition, as Waynesboro may be entering a transition, while Chambersburg looks to climb up the ranks in the district.

King of the Mountain (Dec. 15-16)

Chambersburg wrestling will head up to Central Mountain High School in mid-December for this stacked event with 31 participating teams.

Many familiar Mid-Penn squads like Cumberland Valley and Northern, some York County teams like Central York and Red Lion, and a handful of central Pa. squads like State College, Williamsport, Bald Eagle and Bellefonte, among others.

CV Holiday Invite (Dec. 27)

Chambersburg swim and dive should be a contender this season, and this meet should be one to watch over the holiday break.

The Trojans head to Cumberland Valley for this event, featuring seven squads in total. Emmaus, Souderton, Boiling Springs, Upper St. Clair and Hatboro-Horsham make up the other squads in the event.

York Suburban Girls Holiday Tournament (Dec. 28-29)

Greencastle and York Suburban met in last year’s district championship, and we will see the rematch during this holiday tournament in York.

We will also see Hagerstown’s St. Maria Goretti in action, taking on Columbia. The winners and losers will meet on the following Friday.

Trojan Wars (Dec. 29-30)

The annual wrestling event hosted by Chambersburg is back, and will feature 29 squads from all across the state.

Trinity, West Perry, Palmyra, Lower Dauphin, Gettysburg and Big Spring represent the other Mid-Penn teams in the event.

The Trojans came in fourth in the event last year.

Dunks for Drew (Jan. 6)

One of the most anticipated events every year, the 16th annual Dunks for Drew event benefiting the Drew Michael Taylor Foundation tips off on the Jan. 6 in Chambersburg, with three county teams set for action.

Shippensburg begins the event by taking on Boiling Springs at 6 p.m., followed by county foes Chambersburg and Greencastle.
