Tottenham vs Chelsea LIVE: Premier League result and reaction as late Nicolas Jackson hat-trick sinks 9-man Spurs

Chelsea triumphed in a tumultuous contest at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium which saw the home side reduced to nine men, concede four goals and receive a standing ovation from their own fans at the end of the game.

Spurs started perfectly as Dejan Kulusevski cut in from the right side and saw his deflected effort find the back of the net in the sixth minute. The hosts almost doubled their lead only for Son Heung-Min’s goal to be ruled out for offside but the first of many VAR calls.

The video refs then chalked off a goal for Raheem Sterling before cancelling out Moises Caicedo’s equaliser. This VAR check also resulted in the first of Tottenham’s red card as Cristian Romero was judged to have seriously fouled Enzo Fernandez. Cole Palmer then slotted home the resultant penalty.

In the second half, Destiny Udogie clipped Sterling and earned a second booking causing Tottenham to finish the game with nine men. They kept Chelsea at before Sterling nipped in behind and played in Nicolas Jackson. He added two more goals in stoppage as Chelsea ran away with the game, but Spurs performance won over the fans and the scoreline doesn’t do their efforts justice.

Ange Postecoglou’s high line epitomised Tottenham’s optimism – and their downfall

09:12 , Lawrence Ostlere

When Mauricio Pochettino was asked about Ange Postecoglou’s surprisingly high line a nine, he wasn’t too willing to get into it. The Chelsea manager instead pointed to his side’s own impact on proceedings, how proud he was. He probably wasn’t the only one unwilling to indulge too much praise of Tottenham Hotspur, after a 4-1 defeat Postecoglou’s side unnecessarily lost control of.

There is already that sense of rival fans, if for rather obvious tribal reasons, bristling at the regular appeals to “mate”. The explanation of that high line was probably extreme Postecoglou, the Australian in his ultimate form.

“It is just who we are, mate, it is who we will be for as long as I am here,” the Spurs manager said on TV. “If we go down to five men, we will still have a go.”

Ange Postecoglou appears to aim barb at Arsenal and Mikel Arteta over VAR controversy

09:03 , Lawrence Ostlere

Ange Postecoglou has called on football to start respecting referee’s decisions or risk losing officials entirely to technology, in what appeared to be a barb directed at Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta.

Postecoglou watched on as his Tottenham side fell to pieces against Chelsea on Monday night. Defenders Cristian Romero and were both sent off as nine-man Spurs slumped to a 4-1 defeat.

It followed Arsenal’s 1-0 weekend defeat by Newcastle, which meant Manchester City were able to climb above both north London clubs to the top of the table with their 6-1 win over Bournemouth.

But where Arteta was furious with decisions which he felt went against his side, and was backed up by an Arsenal club statement criticising the quality of officiating in the Premier League, Postecoglou warned that referees need more respect because criticism is “eroding their authority” on field.

Ange Postecoglou reacts to VAR calls as Spurs earn two red cards in defeat to Chelsea

Monday 6 November 2023 23:21 , Mike Jones

Tottenham manager, Ange Postecoglou, says he ‘does not like’ the amount of time it takes for VAR to come to their decisions in the Premier League as his team’s clash with Chelsea was disrupted several times over contentious issues.

Chelsea eventually triumphed 4-1 in the contest in north London as Spurs were shown two red cards, the first coming after a review by the video referee in which Cristian Romero was dismissed.

There were also three goals disallowed in the game and multiple checks for serious foul play which accumulated to 21 minutes of added time across both halves.

Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino, speaking to BBC Sport: “This is football. We won and deserved it. The technology is there and we need to accept. Many things happen on the pitch and you need to verify and check.

“Look at the game between Tottenham and Liverpool here, Tottenham won in the last minute. I think we deserve the credit. Tottenham are doing fantastic but tonight I think we were the better team.

“It is amazing for him and really important to build confidence.

“I think 4-1 in the end we deserved the victory and the three points and it is really important because we have a really important game next with Manchester City.

“It is clear from the beginning we didn’t have the whole squad. This momentum we need to build and on Sunday we have another opportunity to show we are in a good way.”

Chelsea hat-trick hero Nicolas Jackson speaking to Sky Sports: “I am very happy and it has been a difficult time for everybody in the team. We are coming back really slowly and happy to have scored three goals. It’s my first hat-trick, so I am happy to have done it with the biggest club in England and everywhere.

“I need to always improve and work harder. We continue working. Tottenham have an amazing stadium and amazing fans, so we needed to fight and win the game.

“It was really difficult as they continued to maintain their line [when down to 9-men]. We have quality players to give us the ball and we won. We were dreaming about winning the big games and the confidence within the team is coming really slowly.”

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou, speaking to BBC Sport: “There was a fair bit going on, a lot of VAR intervention, a hard game for me to analyse but I am very proud of the players. Right to the end they were trying to create something for us.

“The players couldn’t give any more than they did, part of this game is will, effort and determination and they showed that.”

On VAR decisions and time taken to make them: “I don’t like it, it is the way the game is going. Some of it is self inflicted because if we come out every week complaining about decision that is what will happen, every decision gets forensically checked and we will be sitting around for a long time in every game trying to figure out what is going on.

“I don’t like it but I am probably in the wilderness with that because I keep getting told that’s where we want to go. I am too old school, I’ll respect the referee’s decision right or wrong. But it is the way the game is going.

On Maddison injury: “He got a knock on the ankle, we were down one man already. It made sense to make a couple of changes at that point.”

Chelsea triumph over Tottenham in Premier League clash that had everything and more

Monday 6 November 2023 22:49 , Mike Jones

A farce that sums up a lot of modern football, or one of the games of the season? It maybe sums up how confusing and contradictory this game was that it could genuinely be both. Chelsea’s eventual 4-1 victory at Tottenham Hotspur could have huge effects for both of their seasons too. Mauricio Pochettino’s side have got the win it feels like they have been waiting for, and that at the stadium that still means more to him than any other in football. Ange Postecoglou’s scarcely believable high line with nine men and no main centre-halves did make it border-line for some time. Such a creditable approach earned the applause of the home crowd when it finally went wrong for Nicolas Jackson’s decisive second goal, but there was that unsettling feeling of momentum being undone. Spurs have not just lost their first league game under Postecoglou but also Destiny Udogie and Sergio Romero to suspensions and possibly James Maddison and Micky van de Ven to injury.

That all has the feeling of bringing down a flight that had been improbably soaring for some time.

Postecoglou could of course tell his players it was a freak game. That’s one way of putting it. It was almost several different events in one, as we saw a spell akin to the infamous Battle of the Bridge as well as Saturday’s Copa Libertadores final, a grand staging for every debate about VAR over and over and then what amounted to a bizarre but brave training session, where Postecoglou seemingly set up the irrepressible Guglielmo Vicario against the entirety of Chelsea’s young attack.

To top it off, and turn everything on its head, the previously misfiring Jackson got a hat-trick late on.

More from Ange Postecoglou on VAR decisions: “There will be a forensic study of every decision out there, I think that is the way the game is going and I don’t like it. If you look at all that standing around we did today, maybe people enjoy that sort of thing but I’d rather see us playing football.”

On Tottenham sending offs: “You have to accept the referee’s decision, that is how I grew up. This constant erosion of the referee’s authority is where the game is going to get - they are not going to have any authority. We are going to be under the control of someone with a tv screen a few miles away.

“The decision is the decision. In 26 years I have had plenty of bad decisions, I have had plenty fall in my favour. It is what it is.”

On playing with a high line down to nine men: “It is just who we are mate, it is who we are and who we will be for as long as I am here. If we go down to five men we will have a go.”

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou speaking to Sky Sports: “It is pretty hard to process. It is almost impossible to analyse the game because it just seemed to get out of control for large parts of it. Disappointed by the result but really proud of the players, they gave everything and that is the positive we will take.

“We were very close to getting an equaliser a couple of times and it shows their spirit. It was just a bridge too far today.

“I thought we started really well, scored a great goal and inches away from another. The red card affected the game, I felt like I was standing around waiting for things to happen, with VAR intervention. It felt like a lot of standing around.”

90+9 mins: This is the end. The score is heavily in favour of Chelsea but Tottenham’s persistance to play their way made this encounter extremely entertaining.

Ange Postecoglou suffers his first defeat as Spurs boss but he’ll be proud of the players who dug deep until the end. Nicolas Jackson’s late goals put a dampener on things but the bottom line is that Mauricio Pochettino’s return to north London is a successful one.

To give Tottenham their dues, they are still trying to advance the ball and target the goal. It’s tricky with just nine men though.

Tottenham 1-1 Chelsea

Monday 6 November 2023 21:42 , Mike Jones

70 mins: The longer this game goes on without a Chelsea goal the more Mauricio Pochettino’s players will feel the pressure. They should win from this position but a lack of experience and confidence has seen them make the wrong decisions at the wrong time.

Chelsea have won only eight of their past 39 league fixtures, beating Bournemouth (twice), Crystal Palace, Leeds United, Leicester City, Luton Town, Fulham and Burnley.

They have lost five of their past seven London derbies in the league, as many defeats as in their previous 19 such fixtures.

Why Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham return shows what Chelsea are still missing

Monday 6 November 2023 19:35 , Mike Jones

If some people at Tottenham had their way, or things had gone differently in the summer of 2021, Monday night would not be Mauricio Pochettino’s first return to the club since leaving. There was always an obstacle, though. Although it seemed like many elements might have been aligning to bring Pochettino back to White Hart Lane, both the manager and Spurs sensed it probably wasn’t right to go back.

The approach never came from either side. That left a lot of Spurs fans disappointed, and then feeling betrayed when he went to Chelsea. Such emotion was probably why the response to Ange Postecoglou’s arrival was so muted.

Had the Australian not defied every single argument against his appointment, the response for Pochettino on Monday might have been worse. A long-term sense of dissatisfaction might have fed into a resentment and angry reception. As it is, the mood at Tottenham is totally different. They’re loving Ange instead.

Only Bournemouth (18) and Everton (16) have lost more top-flight matches in 2023 than Chelsea

They have won just four matches since Graham Potter left in April, the fewest of any ever-present Premier League side over the same period.

Spurs are the 13th team to have 26 points or more after 10 matches of a Premier League season. Six of the previous 12 went on to win the title, four were runners-up, Arsenal finished third in 2007-08 and Newcastle United were sixth in 1994-95.

Ange Postecoglou reveals ‘great admiration’ for Chelsea rival Mauricio Pochettino

Monday 6 November 2023 19:15 , Mike Jones

Tottenham head coach Ange Postecoglou has plenty of admiration for Mauricio Pochettino’s appetite to take on a “big challenge” but has suggested he would never allow others to take complete control of recruitment.

Pochettino’s Chelsea visit Spurs on Monday with the west London club struggling for a second consecutive season despite an outlay of £1billion since Todd Boehly took over with his Clearlake Capital consortium last year.

While Pochettino has failed to hit the ground running and acknowledged at the end of September he would “need to be more involved now” with regard to the January transfer window, it is a different story for Postecoglou and his summer transfers.

Pochettino explains how Tottenham’s game can suit Chelsea

Monday 6 November 2023 18:55 , Mike Jones

Mauricio Pochettino says that Tottenham’s attacking style of play could suit his Chelsea team and give them space to run into the final third.

Chelsea have had some success this season against teams who prefer to have the ball and they have come undone against stubborn defensive sides like Brentford.

“When we play against blocks that play so low, we struggle to find and to understand a little bit the positional game and movement. When we have space, we can perform better and create more chances,” said Pochettino.

“You need to have the capacity to be mature. We are talking about a young team who need to grow. You need to be patient. You have to understand the time in the game: when you need to attack, when you need to keep calm and keep possession and circulate the ball.

“These are all things that come with time. At the moment we don’t have time. That’s why we struggle with blocks that play so low. We start to rush decisions, and make mistakes, and not be in positions where we should be. We lost the Nottingham Forest, Villa and Brentford games in transition.

“At 0-0, we need to not lose patience, and keep believing for sure we are going to score. That hasn’t happened. For us that’s why it is better when we play a team that is going to attack you, and also give you space to run.”

No team has scored more Premier League goals away to Spurs than the 51 by Chelsea. The Blues’ four wins at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in all competitions is the most by any side.

Mauricio Pochettino refuses to rule out Tottenham return: ‘Why not?’

Monday 6 November 2023 18:45 , Mike Jones

Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino refused to rule out the possibility of one day returning to manage Tottenham ahead of facing his former club for the first time on Monday night.

Pochettino will go back to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for the first time since the Argentine was sacked in 2019 in tonight’s London derby, having taken charge of rivals Chelsea at the start of the season.

The Argentine led Tottenham to the Champions League final as well as four consecutive top-four finishes during his time with the club, but upon departing Spurs Pochettino said he would want to go back “before he dies” in order to try and win a trophy in north London.

Pochettino returns to Spurs

Mauricio Pochettino says he is not going to act any differently on the sidelines this evening despite being back at a club he once managed.

Pochettino was in charge of Spurs between 2014 and 2019, a period that saw them overperform and reach the Champions League final.

“I don’t believe we need to show something special,” said Pochettino. “We need to be natural, that’s the most important thing.

“You cannot underestimate the Tottenham and Chelsea fans. I don’t want to be a hypocrite and say something I don’t feel, or I’m in the process of creating. People are clever. Chelsea fans know I was Tottenham, they know about the Champions League, they know about the Battle of the Bridge. It’s impossible to hide this emotion. Now I cannot say I forget all those things. That would be stupid.

“I’m going to be natural. I hope to enjoy to a great game, I want to win, that is our competitive side, and at the same time I want to enjoy being in a place that I was part of the process of building something special. That’s it. I am really calm, and I want to enjoy it, and I hope for a good night for us.”

Postecoglu on facing Chelsea tonight

Monday 6 November 2023 18:35 , Mike Jones

The Tottenham manager, Ange Postecoglu, says that big games like this London derby are exciting and he is expecting a fantastic atmosphere when the teams meet at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium tonight.

“It’s a big game, a London derby and Chelsea, traditionally, especially in the last 10, 15 years, have been one of those sides who have been a benchmark for success,” he said ahead of the game,

“Anytime you play in these kind of games you look forward to them. The atmosphere will be great, we’re at home, brilliant for us... all of our home games so far have been fairly exciting, real engagement from our supporters. I’m looking forward to it, it should be another big night for us.

“They are a good team with some outstanding individual players and we’re going to have to be really strong from a collective point of view to overcome that.

“We don’t want to turn it into an individual battle, because they have players who can really hurt you, quality all over the park, but, so far, we’ve been really good in home games, making it difficult for all opposition, limiting their ability to hurt us and also being threatening the other way.”

Ange Postecoglou happy with Daniel Levy relationship but rules out rafting trip

Monday 6 November 2023 18:25 , Mike Jones

Ange Postecoglou feels he already has a very healthy relationship with Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy, but will not go white water rafting with him any time soon.

Postecoglou will on Monday night come up against former Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino, who once revealed in his book ‘Brave New World’ that a staff-bonding exercise in Argentina resulted in himself, Levy and his coaches taking to the water.

While Postecoglou laughed off any prospect of a repeat occurring, he did acknowledge the importance of gaining Levy’s trust and gave credit to the previously under-fire chairman for a strong start to the new season.
