Tottenham: Eric Dier to join Bayern Munich on permanent deal after transfer option triggered

Bayern Munich will sign Eric Dier on a permanent deal in the summer.

The Tottenham defender is currently on loan at the Bundesliga giants having joined in the January transfer window ahead of his contract in north London expiring at the end of the campaign.

Dier’s £3.4million loan move runs until the summer but contained an option to keep him in Germany for another year.

That option has now been triggered and he will effectively sign as a free agent once his Spurs deal ends, on a contract to 2025.

Dier has played six times in just over a month with Bayern, beating the number of Tottenham appearances he managed in the Premier League during the entire first half of the campaign (four).

Munich have struggled for form under Thomas Tuchel this season, leading to his early exit once the season ends, but beat RB Leipzig courtesy of a late Harry Kane strike last weekend.

Tuchel hopes that will provide momentum for Friday’s clash with Freiburg before a Champions League showdown with Lazio, which sees the Italians bring a one-goal lead in their last-16 tie to Germany.

"It's been a good week," Tuchel told his pre-game press conference. "A win always helps everyone, particularly a last-minute win. It's given us confidence and a positive general feeling.

"We've had a good week, the messaging hasn't changed much. We're carrying on. Tomorrow it's about being ready. The focus is more than ever on the here and now."
