Top Somerset County baseball and softball playoff performers for May 20-24

Athlete of the Week

Windber track and field athlete Lukas Betcher was voted Daily American Somerset County Male Athlete of the Week while Conemaugh Township track and field athlete Baylee Sleek was selected Female Athlete of the Week for their efforts May 13-18.

Betcher upset defending District 5 Track and Field champion Bryson Hetz in the javelin with a throw of 165-09.

Meanwhile, Sleek set a new District 5 Track and Field Championship record, clearing 5-6 in the high jump competition.

Softball

District 5 Class 1A quarterfinals

Berlin Brothersvalley 11, Turkeyfoot Valley 1 (5): Coral Prosser recorded two hits, four RBIs and scored two runs to help the Mountaineers over the Rams.

Elena Ritchey homered twice. Haylee Speicher added two hits and an RBI. Ritchey tossed a complete game no-hitter, striking out 10.

Softball

District 5 Class 1A quarterfinals

Shade 15, Rockwood 5 (5): Payton Maddy went 2-for-3 with two RBIs to help the third-seeded Panthers past the sixth-seeded Rockets.

Tara Corradini had two hits, including an RBI double for Shad. Kori Boozer, Jaedyn Krupper, Lowen Mincek, Laiken Orner and Kaylee Jamison each provided two hits, and Lindsay Frazier delivered a 2-run double.

Kalynne Ohler recorded an RBI triple while Miley Pletcher and Sydney Beals each hit an RBI double for Rockwood.

Meyersdale 10, Forbes Road 0 (6): Laurel Daniels racked up two hits, including a double, homer, two RBIs and three runs scored to propel the top-seeded Red Raiders to a win.

Marcella Dupre tallied two RBIs while Amber Long and Izabella Donaldson each doubled and drove in a run. Donaldson allowed one hit and struck out 16.

District 5 Class 1A quarterfinals

Conemaugh Township 15, Turkeyfoot 0 (4): Larry Weaver and Luke Haight combined for a no-hitter as top seed Conemaugh Township pummeled Turkeyfoot.

Luke Weber racked up three hits, including a home run and four RBIs while Zack Petree provided two hits, including a homer and four RBIs. Haight chipped in four hits and three RBIs.

Rockwood 10, Shanksville-Stonycreek 3: Hunter Whipkey delivered three hits, including a home run, three RBIs and two runs scored to propel the fourth-seeded Rockets over the fifth-seeded Vikings.

Aaron Show tallied two hits and two RBIs while Davis Bruening added two RBIs for Rockwood. Conner Handwerk, Max Trimpey and Aaron Show each had two hits.

Fannett-Metal 4, Berlin Brothersvalley 2: Craig Jarvis recorded a hit and an RBI for the sixth-seeded Mountaineers in a setback to the Tigers.

Cale Kosic contributed two hits and Nick Koval provided an RBI for Berlin.

Other scores: No. 2 seed Southern Fulton bested Meyersdale 16-2 in five innings.

Tussey Mountain 11, Windber 4: Lucas Oleksa homered for the fifth-seeded Ramblers in a setback to the fourth-seeded Titans.

Andrew Scalia tallied two hits and a run while Mason Horner added an RBI for Windber.
