Top performers around Emmet, Charlevoix County for April 18-22

Here are the top high school sports performances from Thursday through Monday around Emmet and Charlevoix Counties.

There won’t be a set number of players chosen in each sport in a given period, just including performances which stood out and deserve recognition.

Check for another installment of top performers early next week.

BASEBALL 

Hunter Lemerand, Charlevoix: The Rayders earned a tourney victory with wins over Marion (7-0) and Evart (9-1), with Lemerand tossing a perfect game over six innings vs. Marion. He struck out 13 batters.

Ely Pethers, Petoskey: In a pair of wins over Ogemaw Heights last week, Pethers combined to go 2 for 5 with two doubles and four RBIs. He also pitched 3 2/3 in an 8-2 win.

AJ Speigl, Charlevoix: Speigl was a machine against Marion and Evart Friday, going 1 for 2 with a double, two RBIs, two runs scored and two steals vs. Marion, then 1 for 3 with a triple, three RBIs, two runs scored and a steal against Evart. He also helped turn a triple play.

Ryan Novak, Harbor Springs: Novak had a heck of a game in an 11-1 win over Suttons Bay. going 2 for 3 with a homer and three RBIs, while also earning the win pitching four and 2/3 innings with one hit allowed and eight strikeouts.

Brendan Aenis, East Jordan: Aenis showed a big bat in a 7-3 win and 3-3 tie against Hillman Friday, going 3 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs in the win and 1 for 2 with a double and two RBI in the tie.

Owen Waha, Charlevoix: In a victory over Evart, Waha went 3 for 4 with an RBI and three steals, then added an RBI single against Marion.

Derk Boerman, Harbor Light: Boerman got it done in a 5-1 win over Pickford Friday, going 2 for 3 with a homer and three RBIs, then also struck out three over three and 2/3 innings to earn the win.

Lucas Stone, East Jordan: Stone went 3 for 4 with an RBI in the opening game win over Hillman Friday for EJ. He added a single and RBI in the nightcap as well.

Andru Vernale, Harbor Springs: In a pair of games against Suttons Bay and Glen Lake, Vernale combined for three hits, including a double and three RBIs.

Bryce Johnson, Charlevoix: In a pair of wins over Marion and Evart, Johnson singled in two RBIs against Marion, then had an RBI double and pitched three innings with four strikeouts and a hit allowed against Evart.

Korbyn Russell, East Jordan: Russell mowed down Hillman batters over six innings with 13 strikeouts in a 7-3 win, then added a double, single and run scored between the two games.

Will Paulus, Harbor Light: Paulus had a solid couple games against Pickford, going 2 for 2 with two RBIs, a home run and a double in the nightcap 7-3 win, then also 1 for 2 with an RBI in the 5-1 opener.

GOLF 

Vaughn Henagan, Harbor Light: Henagan was the medalist at the Cheboygan Invite Monday, shooting a round of 72, leading a field of 16 different teams.

Hudson Vollmer, Charlevoix: Vollmer is off to a good start to the year, shooting a team-best 78 in Cheboygan Monday, which followed a 78 and 84 carded in the TC Tee Off over the weekend.

Andrew Stadt, Boyne City: Stadt finished runner-up in the season opener Monday in Cheboygan, carding a 76.

SOFTBALL 

Callie Keiser, Harbor Springs: Against the Cheboygan JV Saturday, a 14-8 loss for Harbor, Keiser went 3 for 3 with two RBIs.

Morgan Erickson, Boyne City: Erickson had a strong couple of games against Rudyard and Cheboygan, going a combined 5 for 7 with a double and four RBIs.

Molly Ogden, Harbor Light: In a 26-18 loss against Burt Lake NMCA, Ogden went 3 for 4 with a double, triple, four RBIs, three runs scored and two steals. Harbor Light also earned a 17-16 win in the nightcap, their first of the season (1-7).

Mary Lentz, Charlevoix: Charlevoix picked up its first win of the season in a 14-3 victory over Harrison, with Lentz going 2 for 2 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored. She also earned the win with four strikeouts and just one hit allowed.

Natalie Grobaski, Boyne City: In a trio of Saturday hosted games, Grobaski went 4 for 6 with a homer and four RBIs, as the Ramblers fell to Plymouth Christian (6-1), then topped Rudyard (15-0) and Cheboygan (8-7).

SOCCER

Mady Smith, Petoskey: Smith had the game-winning goal in a 1-0 win over TC Central last Thursday, making Petoskey 2-0 in the BNC.

Karlee Eaton, Charlevoix: With a 3-2 win over Boyne City last week and a 3-1 win over Suttons Bay Monday, the Charlevoix girls have won two straight. Eaton scored in both games, including two against Boyne.

Petoskey Backline: A combination of Quinn Matthews, Lia Czarnecki, Sydney Hoffman, Abby Wonnacott and Ellie Ward have kept a zero on the scoreboard with six straight shutouts to begin the season, including on Thursday and Friday.

LACROSSE 

Charlie Thomas, Petoskey: Petoskey earned a 13-2 win over Traverse City United (B team) last week, then fell in a 13-9 game against Midland Dow. Thomas combined for seven goals and six assists.

Brandon Klingelsmith, Petoskey: In a pair of games late last week, Klingelsmith had seven goals and three assists.

TRACK & FIELD 

Korbin Sulitis, Petoskey: Sulitis set personal bests in both the discus (158-5) and shot put (38-9, outdoor PR) during the Rathbun Invite Friday. The discus throw was a runner-up finish among more than 50 throwers.

Logan Wadkins, Charlevoix: A junior sprinter, Wadkins set a new PR in the 100 (12.04) with a win and was runner-up in the 200 (25.00) with a runner-up finish in Elk Rapids Monday.

Brody Shaw, Petoskey: Shaw placed third in the discus with a new PR (150-2), then was also seventh in the shot put with a season best (44-0) in Cadillac Friday.

Peyton Scott, Charlevoix: Scott set a new PR in the long jump in Elk Rapids Monday with a jump of 20-feet, 10.75 inches to win the event. He was also runner-up in the 110 hurdles (15.91) and 300 hurdles (44.57), both season bests.

Paige Keiser, Harbor Springs: Keiser earned a season-best time in the 400 (1:05.39) for a win in Elk Rapids Monday, then added a new PR and runner-up leap in the long jump (15-3.5). She was also third in the 200 (29.95).

Petoskey Boys 4x400 Relay: The relay team of Mason Fralick, Seth Marek, Brady Odenbach and Sam Mitas earned a win in the Rathbun Invite in a time of 3:37.80, beating the previous best 1,600 PHS relay time this season by eight seconds.

Nora O’Leary, Petoskey: O’Leary set a new PR in the 800 meter run (2:35.99) in sixth and was fifth in the 1,600 with a new season best (5:35.54) in Cadillac.

Leah Sulitis, Petoskey: Like her brother, Leah Sulitis had a PRs in both the shot put (30-6.5) and discus (97-4) on Friday in Cadillac.
