Top HS girl's track and field performances: Week 10

The state high school track and field AIA Division Championships are taking place this week at Mesa Red Mountain High School and Glendale Deer Valley High School. During the 2024 season, The Arizona Republic has been tracking the top performances each week as Arizona’s best athletes compete on the oval and in the field.

Here are the top girls' performances from the 10th week of the season.

1. Sofia Boonzaayer, Glendale Preparatory Academy, throws, Jr.: Had a huge career day at the Northeast Valley Championships held at Scottsdale Horizon High School, throwing 43-3 feet in the shot put to move up to No. 2 in the state for the event. It’s a seven-foot improvement from her best throw last season, which is a remarkable jump in performance in such a short amount of time. Before last week, Boonzaayer had never thrown further than 38 feet in her high school career.

2. Rebekah-Jhade Garrett, Phoenix North Canyon, hurdles, So.: Ran a blazing 14.11 in the 100-meter hurdles at Northeast Valley Championships, the third-fastest time in the state this season. The transfer from Waddell Canyon View continues to track on record-breaking trajectory. Gilbert Williams Field’s Saira Prince (the previous state record-holder from 2023) ran 14.25 as a sophomore; Chandler Hamilton’s Ashlee Moore (who set the record in 2014) ran 14.23 as a sophomore; Chandler Hamilton senior Kori Martin (the current state record holder) did not run as a sophomore due to a torn ACL, but ran 13.81 as a freshman in 2021. Jhade Garrett could be up next.

3. Katrina Trahan, Oro Valley Canyon del Oro, throws, Sr.: Threw 140-11 in the discus at the East Valley Qualifier held at Queen Creek High School, surpassing Chandler Basha junior Juliana Garcia for No. 2 in Arizona. Trahan joins Gilbert Campo Verde senior and BYU commit Brooklyn Montgomery as the second athlete this season to have further than 140 feet in the discus.

4. Amerah Richardson, Chandler Arizona College Preparatory, jumps, So.: Went 18-9.75 in the long jump at the East Valley Qualifier to move up to No. 3 in the state. Richardson leapfrogs talented Chandler Hamilton sophomore Jaiden Ware for the underclassmen state lead in the event in the process. With the top three athletes (Glendale Copper Canyon junior Zalaya Dupre and Chandler junior S’Niyah Cade) all ranked three inches within each other, it should be a tight fight for first at the upcoming Open State Championships.

5. Aniyah Martin, Phoenix Sunnyslope, sprints/hurdles, So.: After injuries hampered her start to the season, Martin is healthy and back in top form as she ran 43.69 to come in second in the 300-meter hurdles at the Northeast Valley Championships behind rising Phoenix Xavier Prep junior Eleanor Borchard. Martin ran the fastest time in state history for freshmen in the 300-meter hurdles last season, according to the MileSplit Arizona database, when she went 43.13 at the Open State Championships. It’s Martin’s best race since last May, and shows she’s gearing up for the postseason. Martin also recently ran 25.20 in the 200 meters at the Glendale Union District Championships on April 17, breaking the school record.

Other highlights

  • Chandler Lincoln Prep senior Alexis Ortiz — a Saint Mary’s commit — ran 2:16.09 to finish first at the Seton Catholic Last Chance Qualifier, moving up to No. 5 in the state.

  • Scottsdale Chaparral sophomore Gabbie Banning ran 44.89 in the 300-meter hurdles at the Northeast Valley Championships, the No. 8 time in Arizona.

  • Gilbert Highland freshman Janie Brower cleared 5-3 in the high jump at the Last Chance Qualifier and Underclassmen Showcase held at Phoenix Desert Vista High School to move into a four-way tie for No. 8 in Arizona.

  • Scottsdale Notre Dame Preparatory junior Jazmyn Kinzel went 11-9 in the pole vault at the Northeast Valley Championships, which ties her at No. 4 in the state with Hamilton junior Addison Kohlmeier.
