Top defensive backs to watch during 2023 high school football season in Acadiana

Here are the top defensive backs to watch for the 2023 high school football season from the Acadiana area:

Tyrease Boast

Church Point, Jr.

Why: Boast, at free safety, is primed to be one of Church Point's top defensive playmakers. The 5-7, 165-pounder will be counted on to keep big plays off the board for opponents.

Kameron Callis

Beau Chene, Sr.

Why: Callis (5-10, 170) has explosiveness which has led Beau Chene's coaches to place him at strong safety. The senior is a fierce competitor and will be a big defender for his team.

Derrick Collins

Southside, Jr.

Why: Southside coaches wanted to highlight his tackling ability so they moved Collins (5-9, 165) from cornerback to strong safety ahead of the 2023 season.

Kaleb Daniels

Teurlings Catholic, Jr.

Why: Defensive backfield may be the strong suit for Teurlings this season and Daniels (5-11, 175) at free safety factors into that. The junior was more than dependable last season and will be the captain on the backend of the team's defense this season.

Peyton David

St. Thomas More, Sr.

Why: David returns for STM coming off a Second-Team All-District junior campaign in 2022. The 6-foot, 185-pound free safety leads a strong Cougar secondary that features a couple of returning starters.

Gylen Ford

Teurlings Catholic, Sr.

Why: The 6-1, 190-pound senior cornerback enters the 2023 season as one of the Rebels' defensive leaders and one of the fastest players on the squad with 4.5 40-yard dash speed.

Amir Hill

Acadiana, Sr.

Why: On a defense seemingly filled with stars, Hill serves as the Wreckin' Rams general in the secondary. Expectations are sky-high for Hill (6-1, 180) and will be paramount for Acadiana in the backend.

Why: Jones completes a dynamic and formidable corner tandem for Teurlings Catholic with Ford on the other side. Jones (5-11, 170) had a solid season as a junior in 2022 and coaches expect him to be even better in 2023 for the Rebs.

Bo Lancon

Erath, Sr.

Why: Lancon paced the Bobcat defense in 2022 with four interceptions and in 2023, the 6-foot, 165-pound senior will be the team's lockdown cornerback. Erath coaches anticipate Lancon having a big senior campaign.

Ty Lee

Lafayette Christian Academy, Sr.

Why: A three-year starter for the Knights, Lee is coming off an All-State season in 2022. While his recruitment has been slow, it's expected that things will pick up for Lee on that front with another good season in 2023.

Tylon Major

Beau Chene, Sr.

Why: Major is labeled as a "special athlete" and a great leader for Beau Chene by his coaches. The 5-11, 165-pounder will make plays on both sides of the ball but his main impact will be at free safety.

Landon Norris

Carencro, Sr.

Why: One of the Bears' most gifted football players this season. Norris is the Carencro defense's lockdown cornerback that will cover the best receiver week-in, week-out but also has the innate ability to help defend the run as well.

Joseph Richard

Beau Chene, Sr.

Why: Richard is one of the best athletes for the Gators and the 6-2, 150-pounder has plenty of versatility as well. At corner, Richard will look to limit opponents' passing attack.

Jared Thomas

Eunice, Sr.

Why: Thomas (5-10, 160) is the best cover guy on Eunice's team. He's also one of the most reliable tacklers on the Bobcat defense.

Tyren Wheeler

Beau Chene, Sr.

Why: The Gator defense has a veteran secondary and Wheeler is one of the team's most experienced players. Coaches love his leadership and the 5-8, 140-pounder will be a key player at cornerback.
