Tommy DeVito throws three TDs as Giants beat Commanders 31-19
Giants rookie quarterback Tommy DeVito's first three NFL appearances were rough, but his fourth time out turned out to be much better.
DeVito was 18-of-26 for 246 yards and three touchdowns and Isaiah Simmons returned an interception for another score in the final seconds to dash the Commanders' hopes for a comeback win. The 31-19 win moves the Giants to 3-8 heading into their Week 12 matchup with the Patriots.
The Commanders sacked DeVito nine times over the course of the game, but DeVito was consistently able to come up with big gains when he was able to avoid the pass rush long enough to deliver passes. Darius Slayton had a 40-yard score and he connected with Saquon Barkley, WanDale Robinson, and Daniel Bellinger for other gains of more than 20 yards. Barkley caught DeVito's other two touchdowns and picked up 140 yards from scrimmage despite getting off to a slow start on the ground.
Washington won't have nearly as much to like about their offensive outing. Sam Howell's recent run of success came crashing to a halt with three interceptions and they lost three fumbles — one was on a Byron Pringle kickoff return at the start of the second half — over the course of the game. There were also four Giants sacks that helped pave the way to a Commanders loss on a day when they outgained the Giants and doubled their first downs.
There won't be much time for the Commanders to lick their wounds as they will be in Dallas on Thursday and another loss will move them to 4-8 on the season. That would heat up the already hot seat that head coach Ron Rivera is on as the season moves into its final stretch, so it's pretty much do or die time in Washington.
