Tom Maderia recently stepped down as Burlington Township High School’s football coach after 21 seasons, he confirmed on Tuesday afternoon.

“It was time for a new voice here,” he said.

Maderia had a 131-82 mark with the Falcons, making the playoffs in 18 of 20 years they were played. He led the program to the South Jersey Group 3 final in 2018 and had just three losing campaigns, including this past season, in which Burlington Township went 2-8.

“It was a good ride,” he said. “It was fun, had a lot of good kids come through the program.”

Maderia plans on joining forces with his son TJ Maderia at Holy Cross on a part-time basis.

“He really wanted to play before I retired, but it just wasn’t feasible with the amount of kids he has on his team with the amount I have at Burlington Township,” Tom said. “The next best thing would be to coach with him.”

Tom Maderia led the Lancers for 11 seasons before going to Burlington Township. He had a 90-28 mark at Holy Cross and won a pair of state titles.

Maderia was the fifth-longest tenured coach in South Jersey. Three of the top six have confirmed 2023 will be their last at their respective schools – Florence’s Joe Frappolli (50 years), Maderia and Seneca’s Bill Fisher (20).

Only three current area coaches have been with their programs for at least 20 years now – Shawnee’s Tim Gushue (41 years), Delsea’s Sal Marchese (31) and Haddonfield’s Frank DeLano (22).

Maderia is still open to pursuing other head-coaching opportunities, depending on what becomes available.

“If a job opens up that really intrigues me and I’m interested in,” he responded when asked the question.

Maderia added, “I still have a couple good years in me.”
