Tom Brady still feels “crappy” about Super Bowl losses to Giants

Tom Brady and the New England Patriots are preparing for Super Bowl LI against the Atlanta Falcons at NRG Stadium in Houston. This will be New England’s NFL-record ninth Super Bowl while Brady will play on Super Bowl Sunday for the seventh time in his career.

If New England beats Atlanta, it will be the fifth Super Bowl for both the franchise and Brady. Patriots fans believe history will be made on Sunday. They need to be reminded of another possibility: being on the wrong side of history.

February 3 (Friday) and February 5 (Sunday) have historical significance for Brady and the Patriots. Friday is the ninth anniversary of Super Bowl XLII and Sunday is the fifth anniversary of Super Bowl XLVI.

New England was favored in both games only to be upset by the New York Football Giants.

Brady and the Patriots went undefeated in the regular season and their first two postseason games and were 12-point favorites to win Super Bowl XLII. The Giants were an afterthought… until the game started. Eli Manning and Co. denied perfection to the Patriots. Patriots fans like to point out the perceived flukiness of David Tyree’s catch (but defend the Tuck Rule Game with every fiber of their being, but that’s another story). If New England was that formidable, they should have wiped the floor with the Giants…but they didn’t.

In Super Bowl XLVI, New England scored 17 unanswered points after an early 9-0 Giants lead and never scored again. The mighty Patriots lost to a Giants team that was only the Super Bowl winner to be outscored by their opponents in the regular season.

Both Super Bowl victories over the Patriots were rematches of regular season games. The Giants lost at Giants Stadium in 2007 and won at Gillette Stadium in 2011.

Brady won four Super Bowls and is playing for his fifth. Giants fans can take solace in the fact that he feels crappy about losing Super Bowls XLII and XLVI. That is not hyperbole. Brady bluntly told the NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo “there were some crappy feelings I’m sure the Giants fans still love”.

He’s right. Giants fans still love that their team is responsible for the two losses on Brady’s Super Bowl resume. Brady thanked the football gods when the Giants were eliminated by the Green Bay Packers. New England wants no parts of the New York Football Giants in the Super Bowl.

It doesn’t matter whether or not New England wins Super Bowl LI. No one can take Super Bowls XLII and XLVI away from the Giants. Brady’s crappy feelings make the Lombardi Trophies glisten just a little bit more.
