Titans camp day three notes and thoughts
The pads came on. For many fans, that was something they were looking forward to.
Taywan Taylor did well and Coach Mike Mularkey stated that they had a few plays scripted for him today.
Corey Davis didn’t do well and Coach Mularkey blew that off as rookie jitters. The Titans coach asked Davis to give his own opinion of his performance and Davis was displeased. Mularkey appreciated his honesty and candor.

The Titans are lining up Matthews and Decker at one wide receiver spot and the rookies at the other. Let’s break this down:
The Titans had one wide receiver on the field for 53 percent of offensive snaps last season. Two is certainly a change.
The rookies battling it out offer some spirited competition and a similar learning curve as they adjust to the NFL.
Mularkey said, “Every one of our receivers—we don’t even put a slot depth chart on the original depth chart. Everybody starts outside and then when we go to three wides then we create that. Everybody will be outside, then we’ll have a select few that will go inside and he’s one of them.” The “he” he is referring to is Taywan Taylor. Eric Decker was in the slot plenty. Previously it was stated that Matthews would play the slot some. That’s three. We don’t exactly who the “select few” is that Mularkey is mentioning, but it would seem to include those three.
The Titans coach was pleased with Kevin Byard. “He looks like a long time vet the way he makes his calls and gets everybody in the right place. And again, offensively we do a lot of things—there’s a lot of moving parts that you have to adjust to and make sure everybody’s on the same page to adjust to what we do and he’s done very well with that.”
Mularkey praised Austin Johnson, LeShaun Sims, and DaNorris Searcy during the presser today. The Titans also announced that Sims won an award for his offseason work. Searcy and Sims are interesting because Adoree Jackson and Johnathan Cyprien were brought in to play the same position. Johnson needs to win a starting spot over DaQuan Jones. Nothing has been gifted to the younger players and the competition seems to have heated up.
DeMarco Murray had a cramping issue and then Derrick Henry performed well. Before you jump to a conclusion, Mularkey said, “I think he knows his role here. He knows we want to get him the football when we can, he understands his role. That’s why he practices the way he practices, that’s why he meets the way he meets. He gets it, he’s a team player. If you don’t practice like you’re a starter you’re going to have a problem when you line up on Sunday, whether it’s starting a game, or coming in on a game, you better practice like you’re a starter. ”
Demointre Hurst and Jonnu Smith were also complimented by the Coach.
Corey Levin did not have a good day.
