Titans 2nd-round NFL draft pick T'Vondre Sweat is 366 pounds; there's a plan to tweak that

Tennessee Titans second-round NFL draft pick T'Vondre Sweat weighs 366 pounds. Even by the standards of NFL defensive tackles — the biggest, beefiest space-eaters in the league — that's gigantic.

But when Sweat arrives in Nashville, he'll try to do so with a slightly less gigantic stature and significantly more gigantic expectations for himself.

"I’m just going to try to chop it down day by day," he said. "If I go to 355 or 350, more than likely I’ll be a Hall of Famer."

GRADES: Grading the Tennessee Titans pick of T'Vondre Sweat at No. 38 in 2024 NFL Draft

Michael Pierce, the heaviest defensive player to appear in an NFL game last season, was listed at 355 pounds. Dating to 1970, there are only two defensive players who have played in the NFL and been listed as heavier than Sweat.

The Titans say there's an agreed-upon plan in place to keep Sweat's weight under control. Titans GM Ran Carthon says there's a "threshold" of where they want Sweat to be. Coach Brian Callahan jokes that he told Sweat it can be "very expensive" to miss weight in the NFL.

But both agree Sweat is more than a two-down run stopper. They envision him being an every-down presence.

"I trust that he's going to do what's been asked of him and hit the weight number that he needs to be at," Callahan said. "And it's for the best for both his production and his playing and for us as a team. So I think all those things have been conveyed very clearly to him, and I don't anticipate it being an issue for us."

The Titans can now pair Sweat with All-Pro defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons, giving the team a formidable duo in the middle. Last week, Simmons alluded to pressuring Carthon to pick a "big defensive tackle" to help him in the middle, and Carthon says Simmons was the first person who called him to thank him after the Sweat pick was official.

Sweat has a simple message for the rest of the NFL about him and his new running mate.

"Woo, I feel sorry for the league," he said.
