Tigers' Infante leaves rehab game

Detroit Tigers second baseman Omar Infante suffered a setback with his injured left ankle during his rehab assignment with Class A West Michigan.

Infante left Thursday's game early after he experienced continued soreness in the ankle while playing second base. He singled in his first at-bat, struck out his second time up and made one play in the field. The night before, he had served as the designated hitter.

"I'm feeling a lot of pain in my ankle right now," Infante told MLive.com. "Real bad. Now when I'm walking, I feel pain."

The Tigers were hoping that Infante could return to Detroit as early as Friday or possibly play one more rehab game for Triple-A Toledo. His status is now in doubt and his stay on the disabled list could be extended.

Infante expressed concern that he might have tried to push his return. He has been out since the ankle and shin were injured July 3 on a hard takeout slide at second by Toronto's Colby Rasmus.

"I think I come (back) too soon," Infante said. "I don't know what I'm going to do."
