Tiger Woods, 48, sets Masters record for consecutive cuts made, passing Fred Couples, Gary Player

In 1996, a then amateur Tiger Woods carded rounds of 75-75 to miss the cut at the Masters Tournament. Later that year he turned pro, and he's never missed a Masters cut since.

Weathering a grueling 23-hole schedule and wind gusts up to 33 miles per hour on Friday, Woods finished off a 1-over 73 opening round in the morning at Augusta National Golf Club and then carded an even-par 72 to shore up a Masters-record 24th consecutive made cut.

A six-footer for par on the closing hole dropped and Woods gave a tip of the cap to the crowd.

Yes, hobbled, 48 years old and with hardly any warmup in the preceding months, Woods is still relevant. And now, the Golden Bear his only peer in terms of track record at Augusta National, Woods has a chance at adding to the following Masters stats:

  • He has five green jackets, trailing only Jack Nicklaus' six.

  • He has two runners-up finishes and 12 showings in the top five.

  • He has 14 top-10 finishes and 18 top-25 showings, his worst finish as a professional a tie for 40th in in 2022.

Really only once in that 24-year streak has he come has close to missing the cut, last year's 74-73 right on the line. He'd later withdraw with a plantar fasciitis injury.

This year, even with Thursday's weather pushing his workload to 23 holes Friday, Woods never called for a trainer or looked like his body would give out. He finished off the first round at 1 over after bogeying 14 and 18 and, just 52 minutes later, was back on No. 1 ready to start his second round.

He shot an even-par 36 on the first nine after birdies on the third, sixth and eighth holes, and followed with a bogey on 14 with a birdie on 15 to shoot even on the second nine.

The latest cut made passes Fred Couples and Gary Player, two other green jacket winners, the former who made the cut in his first 23 Masters events.
