New Bedford girls volleyball tops Durfee and SouthCoast's top performers for Sept. 22

The 2023 fall season is in full swing for SouthCoast's nine schools — Apponequet, Bishop Stang, Dartmouth, Fairhaven, GNB Voc-Tech, New Bedford, Old Colony, Old Rochester and Wareham.

Here's a look at the top high school performers, highlights and scores from Sept. 16-22.

Friday, Sept. 22

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Annabelle Huston had six kills and six service points for New Bedford (2-5, 1-2 SEC) in a 3-0 win over Durfee. NaRya Burgos chipped in with five kills while Narissa Blevines had three kills, two blocks, eight service points and three aces. Lily Gonet added 18 assists.

Layna Ross had 15 kills and four blocks while Morgan Teves added 15 kills and 16 digs to power GNB Voc-Tech (7-1, 5-1 SCC) to a 3-1 win over Bishop Stang. Elle McCormack chipped in with 41 assists, 11 aces and 10 digs. For Stang (2-4, 1-2 CCL), Ali James had five kills, two aces and one block while Lilly Manning chipped in with four kills, two aces and eight digs.

Adeline Ablett was flawless at the net going 23 for 23 with seven kills while Chloe McKinnon also had seven kills for Dartmouth (5-1, 3-0 SEC) in a 3-0 loss to Oliver Ames. Alaina Strozik added 22 assists and Haley Jenkins and Brooke Davis each had five kills.

Evie Francis led Wareham (6-1) in a 3-0 win over Seekonk with eight kills and two aces while Riley Florindo chipped in with 15 digs, three aces and three assists. Priscilla Ross added seven digs and three aces while Olivia LaCava had 10 digs and 20 assists. Julia McDuffy added six kills.

Kelly Quinn had four aces, one kill and two digs for Old Colony (0-5, 0-2 MAC) in a 3-0 loss to Norfolk Aggie. Logan Crook added five digs, three aces and one kill.

GIRLS SOCCER

Morgan Hayward and Arden McCarty each scored two goals while Emma Seaberg added on two and three assists. Leah McGee had a goal and an assist while Molly Harrold and CeCe Levrault each chipped in with a goal. Grace Schwartz made four saves in net for the Lakers (6-0-1, 4-0-1 SCC).

BOYS SOCCER

George Psichopaidas had two first-half goals to lead Old Rochester (2-1-1, 1-1-1 SCC) to a 2-1 win over Falmouth. Jackson Veugen and Grady Oliveira each had an assist.

FIELD HOCKEY

Zoey Cardinal made five saves for Wareham (0-3-2, 0-1 MAC) in a 0-0 tie with Brockton for her first shutout of the season.

Zaelyn Zuber had a hat trick to lead Dartmouth (5-0, 3-0 SEC) to a 7-0 win over Bridgewater-Raynham. Ava Jorge scored her first varsity goal while Sydney Almeida, Sarah Cabral and Grace Haskell each scored once.

GOLF

Craig Baptista led New Bedford (0-4) in a 112-79 loss to Bridgewater-Raynham by shooting a 42 (21 points). Trevor Roderiques shot a 46 while Luke Tarpey carded a 47.

Will Gangi shot a 40 while Tom Moreira (41), Eric Belliveau (43) and Jacob Grieve (44) also contributed for Dartmouth (4-0, 2-0 SEC) in a 260-270 win over Apponequet.

Thursday, Sept. 21

BOYS SOCCER

Landon Raposa had two goals and one assist as Dartmouth (2-2, 2-2 SEC) beat Bridgewater-Raynham 4-1. Lucas Macedo and Ian Berreira each scored once while Andrew Sousa had two assists and Lucas Martinez added one.

GIRLS SOCCER

Brea Arruda made six saves for Old Colony (1-1-2, 1-0-2 MAC) in a 0-0 tie with South Shore.

Caitlyn Cordeiro was strong in net for New Bedford (1-5, 0-3 SEC) in a 6-0 loss to Durfee.

FIELD HOCKEY

Ally Arruda made six saves for Apponequet (1-4-1) in a 0-0 tie with Old Rochester. Reilly Patraiko made three saves for ORR (1-1-2, 1-1-2 SCC).

Molly Kearney had Bishop Stang’s lone goal in a 7-1 loss to Bishop Feehan. Julia Caron made 14 saves for the Spartans (1-3, 0-2 CCL).

GOLF

Dom Snyder shot a 39 for the first time in a high school match to help Apponequet (3-4) beat West Bridgewater 251-309. Cam Poirier shot a 40 while Jared Freitas carded a 41. Nate Gamache, Leah Hollenbeck, Todd Soares, Kyle Boucher and Andrew McCarey all won their matches as Old Colony (2-2, 2-2 MAC) beat Norfolk Aggie 8-1.

Wednesday, Sept. 20

GOLF

Matt Costello shot a 1-over par 37 at the par 36 Country Club of New Bedford to lead undefeated Bishop Stang (4-0, 2-0 CCL) to a 217-162 win over Bishop Feehan. Nathaniel Mello shot a 37 while Matt Oliveira carded a 38 and Talbot Lown had a 39.

Peter le Gassick shot an even par 36 at Lakeville Country Club to power Old Rochester (5-0, 5-0) to a 245-262 win over Apponequet. Logan Franco shot a 40 while Jack Czerkowicz carded a 41. Cam Poirier shot a 38 for Apponequet (2-4). Cam Sylvia carded a 42 while Jared Freitas shot a 44.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Aubrie Letourneau recorded 25 assists, 12 digs, 12 service points and three aces for Old Rocheseter (5-2, 4-1 SCC) in a 3-1 win over Somerset Berkley. Caroline Brogioli added 12 service points, two aces and 11 digs. She also was 22 of 22 passing.

Alaina Strozik had 31 assists and Haley Jenkins slammed down 10 kills for Dartmouth (5-0, 3-0 SEC) in a 3-0 win over Durfee. Adeline Ablett and Brooke Davis each had seven kills while Davis also had 18 digs. Chloe McKinnon contributed eight kills and Gaby Velazquez chipped in with four aces, nine service points and five digs.

Delaney Jacobsen had five kills and 10 service points and Morgan Oliveira added eight digs, six service points and two aces for Apponequet (3-3, 2-3 SCC) in a 3-0 sweep over Dighton-Rehoboth. Nora Moynihan added five kills while Sophia Estrella chipped in with four kills, eight service points and three aces.

Kiana Coppa recorded seven kills and three aces while Liz DaCunha had seven digs and 27 serve receptions for Fairhaven (2-4, 2-3 SCC) in a 3-0 loss to Case. Ava Bissonnette chipped in with two kills, three aces, 11 assists and five digs while Carly Bradshaw had two kills and was 4 of 4 serving.

Elle McCormack had 22 assists and was a perfect 16 of 16 from the service line with four aces to power GNB Voc-Tech (6-1, 5-1 SCC) to a 3-0 win over Seekonk. Layna Ross had 13 kills while Morgan Teves added five.

Evie Francie had 16 digs, five kills and four aces for Wareham (5-1) in a 3-0 win over Holbrook. Jolee Anderson added six kills and two aces while Hanna Milne (three aces) and Stoney Ferry (ace) each had four digs. Julia McDuffy chipped in with five kills.

Kelly Quin led Old Colony (0-4, 0-2 MAC) in a 3-0 loss to South Shore with three kills, two digs and one ace. Logan Crook added two kills and eight digs while Milian Mendes chipped in with one kills, two blocks and one ace.

FIELD HOCKEY

Samantha Souza scored the game-winner for undefeated Dartmouth (4-0, 2-0 SEC) off a pass from Kallie Rose with 8:56 left in the third quarter of a 1-0 win over Durfee.

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

Makai Vincent clocked a personal-best 22:43 to finish first and pace Dartmouth (2-0, 2-0 SEC) in a 21-36 win over New Bedford. Lauren Kelly was second (22:51) followed by Amya Moura (23:23).

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY

Jared Mendonca ran a personal-best 17:44 to lead Dartmouth (1-1, 1-1 SEC) to a 15-50 win over New Bedford. Luke Bloom-Glover was second (18:05) while Elaijah Monteiro came in third (18:46).

GIRLS SOCCER

Casey Radley had eight saves for Apponequet (5-0-1, 3-0-1 SCC) in a 0-0 tie with Dighton-Rehoboth.

Liz Feeney and Kate Thomsen each had a goal and an assist while Amanda Ignacio added a goal for Old Rochester (1-2) in a 4-3 loss to Somerset Berkley.

Kendra Santiago had a hat trick for GNB Voc-Tech (2-3, 2-3 SCC) in a 4-2 win over Seekonk.

Sophia Fluerent scored back-to-back goals in the game’s first six minutes to power Fairhaven (1-3, 1-2 SCC) to a 7-1 victory over Case for the Blue Devils’ first win of the season. Lauren Bernardo (assist) and Elle Boucher each had two goals while Anna Fluerent chipped in with a goal.

BOYS SOCCER

Tommy Smith scored Apponequet’s lone goal in a 1-1 tie with Dighton-Rehoboth. Josh Snyder had 13 saves for the Lakers (2-2-1, 0-2-1 SCC).

Freshman Grady Oliveira notched two second half goals off assists from Aidan Costa to power Old Rochester (1-1-1, 1-1-1 SCC) to a 2-2 tie with Somerset Berkley.

Spencer Menard and Dino Psichopaidas each had two goals and one assist to lead Bishop Stang (2-1-1, 1-0-1 CCL) to a 4-3 win over Cardinal Spellman for the Spartans’ second straight victory. Logan Stott and Marco da Costa each had an assist.

Tuesday, Sept. 19

BOYS SOCCER

Carlentz Jean Piere scored New Bedford’s lone goal in a 1-1 tie with Barnstable. The Whalers are 2-2-1 on the season.

Landon Hunter scored Old Colony’s lone goal and Aven Beauchemin had nine saves in a 4-1 loss to Cape Cod Tech for the Cougars (1-3-1, 0-1-1 MAC).

Nicholas Silvia and Lucas Macdeo each scored a goal for Dartmouth in a 2-1 win over Durfee.

GIRLS SOCCER

Ava Texeira notched two goals and Lilah White and Lindsay Bacciochhi had one goal and one assist apiece as Old Colony beat Cape Cod Tech 6-0 for the team’s first win of the season. Faith Young and Serenity Pina each scored once for the Cougars (1-1-1, 1-0-1 MAC).

Kendra Santiago scored five goals and assisted on another as GNB Voc-Tech (1-3, 0-2 SCC) beat Case 7-0 for the Bears’ first win of the season. Maddie Duarte scored off a corner kick and Allie Borges added a goal. Kaelyn Medeiros recorded her first clean sheet of the season.

Izzie Bromage scored two goals while Lily Ramos had the game-winner for Bishop Stang (4-1, 1-0 CCL). Meg Pimental made 12 saves.

Ollie Costa scored both of New Bedford’s two goals in a 2-1 win over Barnstable for the Whalers’ first victory of the season. Lexie Fitzgerald was strong defensively.

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY

Tyler Young finished first (16:52) and Aidan Silk was second (18:20) to pace Old Rochester in a pair of wins over Dighton-Rehoboth (19-40) and Apponequet (27-28). John Bowman was fourth against D-R and sixth against Apponequet with a time of 18:58.

Nathan Levesque (18:51), Nathan Furtado (18:53) and Ryan Levesque (18:56) led Apponequet (3-1, 3-1 SCC) in a win over Dighton-Rehoboth (21-37) and a loss to Old Rochester (27-28).

Will Guillotte was first while Jacob Duclos was second and Antonio Caneira took third as Voc-Tech (3-1, 3-1 SCC) captured a sweep of Bourne (15-50) and Fairhaven (15-50).

Harrison Zheng took first (20:58) and Jack Finn was second (21:26) for Fairhaven (1-3) in a 21-34 win over Bourne. Zheng came in seventh against Voc-Tech.

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

Hailey Desmarais (19:10), Hannah Kuriscak (22:01) and Keltey Fournier (22:32) paced Apponequet (4-0, 4-0 SCC) in wins over Dighton-Rehoboth (15-45) and Old Rochester (25-30).

Alexia Gonsalves finished first (21:49) to lead the Bulldogs in a 15-46 win over Dighton-Rehoboth. She was second in a 25-30 loss to Apponequet. Hannah Whalley came in second against D-R and fourth against Apponequet with a time of 22:16. Maddie Conner was third against the Falcons and fifth against the Lakers with a time of 22:23.

Nevaeh Escobar took first followed by Morgan Gonsalves and Nariah Tripp as Voc-Tech beat Bourne 15-50 for the Bears’ first win of the season.

Emma Flannery came in second (24:51) while Olivia Darmafol took third (26:24) as Fairhaven (3-1) beat GNB Voc-Tech 25-32. In a 15-50 win over Bourne, Flannery came in first, followed by Darmafol and Natalie Yochim (third; 26:55).

FIELD HOCKEY

Emma Lehane scored the Lakers’ lone goal off an assist from Brynn McLaughlin in a 2-1 loss to Dighton-Rehoboth. Alison Arruda had 13 saves for Apponequet (1-4).

Emilia Perreira and Amber Engel each scored a goal for Old Rochester in a 3-2 loss to Somerset Berkley. Reilly Patraiko made 17 saves for the Bulldogs (1-1-1, 1-1-1 SCC).

Bishop Stang’s Ava Jackson stood out defensively in a 5-0 loss to St. Mary’s.

GOLF

GNB Voc-Tech (2-3, 2-3 SCC) pulled out a thrilling 284-285 win over Dighton-Rehoboth thanks to 40s from both Owen Webster and Talan Allain.

Will Gangi and Matt Jorge both shot 43s (20 points apiece) to lead Dartmouth (3-0, 2-0 SEC) to a 104-87 win over Apponequet.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Lilly Manning had eight kills, three aces and five digs while Lilly Surprenant had 19 assists and three kills for Bishop Stang in a 3-1 loss to Cardinal Spellman. Ali James added seven kills and one ace while Darian Dias had one kill, one ace and 18 digs for the Spartans (2-2, 1-2 CCL).

Monday, Sept. 18

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Aubrie Letourneau recorded 17 assists, five digs and two aces to power Old Rochester to a 3-0 win over Seekonk for the Bulldogs’ fourth straight win. Arielle Troupe had seven kills, four digs and three aces for ORR (4-2, 3-1 SCC).

Sophia Estrella had seven kills, one digs and eight service aces to help Apponequet pull out a thrilling 3-2 win over West Bridgewater. Kohana Fontinha chipped in with six digs, two aces and 19 assists while Orianna Hernandez added five kills, one dig and eight aces. Elise Horton had three kills and four aces for the Lakers (2-3, 1-3 SCC).

Layna Ross had 13 kills and Elle McCormack had 41 assists, but the Bears (5-1, 4-1 SCC) came up short, falling to Case 3-2 for Voc-Tech’s first loss of the season.

Kiana Coppa notched six kills, six digs and one ace to lead Fairhaven in a 3-0 loss to Somerset Berkley. Danica Andersen (one block) and Carly Bradshaw each had four kills for the Blue Devils (2-3, 2-2 SCC).

BOYS SOCCER

Spencer Menard scored two goals and Logan Stott had one as Bishop Stang beat Diman 3-2 for the Spartans’ first win of the season. Dino Psichopaidas added an assist and Donovan Boyle made eight saves for Stang (1-1-1, 0-0-1 CCL).

Saturday, Sept. 16

GIRLS SOCCER

CC Levrault notched three goals while Jaida Beaulieu and Annie Smith each scored once to power the Lakers to a 5-2 win over Durfee. Morgan Hayward and Emma Seaberg each had two assists for Apponequet (5-0, 3-0 SCC).
