Thursday's local roundup, results: Holy Cross soccer teams tie; WooSox win on road

Men's soccer
Holy Cross 1, Manhattan 1: Senior Matt McGonigle's penalty-kick conversion in the 61st minute tied the game for the host Crusaders against the Jaspers in the season opener for both teams at HC's Linda Johnson Smith Soccer Stadium.
Junior Tristan Stephani made three stops for Holy Cross, which plays at 7 p.m. Sunday at Connecticut.
Women's soccer
Holy Cross 1, Maine 1: Senior Cerys Balmer scored her second goal of the season on a shot to the lower left corner in the 26th minute, assisted by classmate Sydney Baldwin, for the visiting Crusaders (0-2-1), but the Black Bears (2-0-1) tied it in the 90th minute in Orono.
Balmer has both HC goals this season. Teammate Mackenzie Wagner had three saves for Holy Cross, which hosts Bryant at 1 p.m. Sunday.
Maine was coming off a 1-0 victory Sunday over Rhode Island.

WooSox 4, Rochester 3: Brian Van Belle (3-2) allowed just two runs over six innings and struck out seven as visiting Worcester (68-54 overall) held off the Red Wings (55-65).
The WooSox, who have won two in a row, improved to 29-18 in the second half, tied for first place with Lehigh Valley in the IL East, and a half game ahead of Durham.
David Hamilton had two hits for the WooSox, who collected four on the day but only one through the first six innings. Worcester scored two runs in the third and two more in the sixth, taking advantage of six walks and two errors.
