Weekend Roundup: Maysville grapplers claim Emmert title to highlight area action

Saturday's Results

Wrestling

Maysville wins Larry Emmert Invite: The Panthers collected 219.5 points to capture the team title with Philo second (214) and host Sheridan third (211.5).

Anthony Humphrey (138) took first, Collin Hague (106) and Carter Abella (120) finished second and Walker Archer (113), Jayce Daniels (126), DJ Waite (132), Logan Wilhite (150) and Dawson Harper (165) came in third for Maysville.

Talan Bailey (157), Brayden Bernard (190) and Landon Gill (285) were champions, Jack Lincicome (165) came in second, Griffin Swartz (144) and Dakota Kinney (175) placed third and Ryan South (106) and Krystian South (126) were fourth for the Electrics.

Cash Owen (113) finished first, Logan Householder (144) and Jacob Householder (150) came in second, Coltyn Reedy (157) placed third and Blake Clouse (120), Thad Nikodym (157) and Mason Dolch (175) were fourth for the Generals.

New Lex wins Vinton County Invite: Conner Spicer pinned Unioto's Luke Howard in 1:43, claiming the 150-pound title and leading the Varsity B Panthers, who totaled 224.5 points for first place.

James Sharp (106), Eli Dixon (113), Ayden Spohn (120) and Harrison Ratliff (144) were second and Ethan Robinson (132), Myles Wilson (138) and Chevy Mozingo (215) finished third for New Lex.

Varsity A competed in the North Canton Hoover where Tyson Spicer led the way with a fourth-place finish. The team was 26th out of 60 teams.

Coshocton fourth to lead area teams at Crooksville Invite: The Redskins tallied 151 points followed by host Crooksville in fifth (143), Zanesville sixth (142.5), River View ninth (89) and West M 10th (57).

Julian Rivera (285) placed first, Caiden Griffiths (120), Trevor Burleson (165) and Severeign Workman (215) were second and Owen Walters (190) took fourth for the Redskins and Christian Browning (138) and Hunter Browning (144) came in first, Jacob Hammer (150) and James Bookless (190) placed third and Elias Miller (157) and Hadrian Walker (215) came in fourth for the Ceramics.

Vince Coleman (106) placed first, Kamilee Dunn (113) and Kamarion Ruff (175) finished third and Aidan Miller (126), Chad Kocher (132) and Isaiah Chason (144) were fourth for the Blue Devils; Gavin Huff (126) won his weight class, Blaze Klein (138) finished second and Alex Smailes (106) came in third for the Black Bears; and Derek Collins (165) and Andrew Stark (190) were second for the Tornadoes.

John Glenn competes at Hudson Invite: Cohen Bunting (175) and Owen Edwards (144) fell in title matches to place second and lead the Muskies to a seventh-place finish with 142 points.

Dominic Bates (150) and Kian Barton (215) were fourth and Kris Wise (132) came in fifth for John Glenn.

Boys Basketball

Columbus Watterson 56, Rosecrans 38: Grady Labishak scored 12 first-quarter points and finished with 23, as the Bishops (4-3) led 12-6 through one quarter, but the Eagles used a 22-11 second quarter to take control.

Tyler Bernett chipped in six points and four rebounds for Rosecrans, while Dom Theadd had 29 points and 15 boards for Watterson, which held a 43-14 advantage on the glass.

Girls Basketball

West Muskingum 57, Liberty Union 24: Lyla Johnson tallied a team-high 15 points, as the Tornadoes (8-1) built a 31-13 halftime advantage in the non-league win.

Addy Antonetz and Jayden Thornton added 11 points each and Taylor Spung chipped in eight for the winners.

Friday's Results

Boys Basketball

New Lexington 55, River View 45: Isaiah Stephens made 5 of 7 3s on his way to a game-high 31 points, as the Panthers (7-1, 5-1) grabbed a Muskingum Valley League crossover win against the host Black Bears (2-5, 1-4).

Stephens also had nine rebounds and five steals, while Lane Ratliff chipped in eight points, Bentley Hanson added seven points and four rebounds and Paul Stenson had six points and four boards for New Lex, which made 19 of 42 field goals and 8 of 16 on 3s.

Warren 86, Cambridge 60: In action at the “Clash at the Coliseum” Friday night at Warren Local High School, the host Warriors coasted to a 86-60 win over the Bobcats.

Warren Local jumped out to a big a 24-9 first quarter lead, as the 'Cats offense struggled to get untracked in the early going. CHS juniors Jesiah Barnett attempted to keep the Bobcats in the game by scoring six first quarter points.

Cambridge managed to play the Warriors pretty even in the second quarter as Barnett, and seniors Bradyn Gregg, and Regan Rogers each connected with triples. Warren enjoyed a comfortable 43-25 at the halftime break.

The Bobcats only managed 10 points in the third quarter with Rylee Homko-Green scoring six of those on a pair of three-pointers as Warren opened up a 29-point lead at 64-35.

Cambridge regrouped and outscored the Warriors 25-20 in the final frame, with Barnett putting up 14 points in the quarter.

Barnett also led the Bobcats (1-5) with 29 points in the game, while Gregg and Rogers each scored nine points.

Licking Valley 58, Sheridan 35: Raine Rodich tallied 12 points and Tyce Whiteman added 10, as the Generals (4-2) fell behind 15-3 after one quarter and never recovered in a loss to the Panthers.

Lakewood 68, Philo 62: Drew Wright tallied 23 points and Cooper Radcliffe chipped in 21 points, as the Electrics (1-5) fell behind 37-19 at halftime and couldn't rally against the Lancers at The Power Plant.

Pomeroy Meigs 66, Crooksville 53: Konlan McIntyre hit four first-quarter 3s and finished with 28 points for the Ceramics (2-5), who trailed 46-42 entering the fourth in the loss.

Brayson Hill chipped in 11 points and Parker Addington scored seven for Crooksville.

Horizon Science 71, West Muskingum 57: The Tornadoes (3-4) led 19-16 through one quarter, but Horizon took a 38-35 halftime lead and built on its advantage in the second half.

Carter Smith led four West M players in double figures with 15 points, while Tavin Bennett hit a pair of 3s among his 12 points and Conner Hill and Cade Porter had 11 points apiece.

Buckeye Trail 67, TCC 44: The Warriors (5-1, 3-1) expanded a 14-11 lead through one quarter into a 35-24 halftime lead in the Inter-Valley Conference North win.

Senior Charlie Parry led the Warriors with a team high 15 points along with 12 rebounds for his second straight double-double effort. Senior Gavin Rome added double figure help with 11 and senior Koen Eagon contributed eight markers.

Senior Jett Giesey and junior Travis Dodd each finished with six points, while senior Brady Hastings racked up five points and eight rebounds for the Warriors.

Garaway 52, Ridgewood 29: The Pirates led 33-14 at the half in an IVC South victory against the Generals (1-5, 0-3).

Girls Basketball

John Glenn 71, Portsmouth West 58: Riley Zamensky poured in 32 points to earn Player of the Game honors, as the Muskies (6-2) led 22-6 after one quarter and picked up a win at the Logan Holiday Showcase.

Mya Oliver added 20 points and Jess Church chipped in eight for the winners.

Emmy Babcock and Faith Hayes had 10 points apiece as the John Glenn reserves won 57-18 over Athens.

Logan 50, Tri-Valley 45: Mackenzie Daubenmire had 17 points and Dani Mahaffrey added 15, as the Chieftains led 23-14 at the half and held off the Scotties (6-3).

MacKenzie Harvey, who made 7 of 8 free throws, collected 21 points and Maddie Garber and Jacie Rollison scored seven each for Tri-Valley.

Rosecrans 43, Liberty Christian 7: The Bishops (3-6) bounced back from Thursday's loss with a win over the Eagles in the Berne Union Holiday event.

South Gallia 51, Crooksville 18: Sonni Nelson had seven points, as the Ceramics (1-7) fell behind 13-3 after one quarter and fell in the Mount Vernon Nazarene basketball event.

Girls Bowling

River View moves to 10-0: The Lady Bears edged out a close victory, 1,694-1,505 over Ridgewood at Legacy Lanes.

The Lady Bears were led by freshman Karley Stocker with a 324, 2 game set, senior Joni Winland with a 319 set and freshman Kaylie Bryan with a 287 set.

River View returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 6 as they host the River View Invite Tournament at Legacy Lanes.

Thursday's results

Swimming

River View sweeps double dual: The Black Bears hosted Ridgewood, Cambridge, John Glenn, and Zanesville on Thursday at the Janet Jones Mulligan Natatorium and won each head-to-head in both girls’ and boys’ results.

Event winners for the girls included the 200 Medley relay of Riley Gottardi, Lily Grewell, Ally Fischer, and Britany Hammond (2:29.25), the 200 Free relay of Gottardi, Kam McGinnis, Hammond, and Fischer (2:15.52), the 400 Free relay of Gottardi, McGinnis, Grewell, and Fischer (5:02.53), McGinnis in the 50 Free (35.84), Fischer in the 100 Fly (1:21.51), Hammond in the 100 Free (1:17.15), Gottardi in the 400 Free (5:51.82), and Kynsingten McMasters in the 100 Breast (1:36.25).

Boys’ event winners were the 200 Medley relay of JT Allison, Jamison Adams, Colin Addy, and Kyle Roach (2:29.44), the 200 Free relay of Adams, Dustin Gregory, Allison, and Addy (2:13.96), the 400 Free relay of Gregory, Roach, Allison, and Adams (5:37.95), Addy in the 50 Free (27.01) and the 100 Back (1:12.26), and Allison in the 400 Free (6:18.90).

River View also competed in the Red Devil Invitational at Wheeling University on Saturday, Dec. 16 where the girls were third and the boys fourth.

Medalists for the girls were the 200 Medley relay of Ally Fischer, Kynsingten McMasters, Riley Gottardi, and Britany Hammond, second, with a time of 2:16.16, and the 400 Freestyle relay of Fischer, Hammond, Kam McGinnis, and Gottardi, second, with a time of 4:34.13. Gottardi was first (1:12.54) in the 100 Backstroke and third (1:12.80) in the 100 Butterfly. Hammond was second (1:08.46) in the 100 Free, and Fischer was second (1:14) in the 100 Back. Also scoring points in individual events were Fischer, fourth (2:47.77) in the 200 Free, McMasters, fourth (1:25.85) in the 100 Breaststroke, and Hammond, sixth (1:19.94) in the 100 Back.

Medaling for the boys was the 200 Free relay of Jamison Adams, JT Allison, Kyle Roach, and Colin Addy, second, with a time of 1:52.88. Addy won the 50 Free (22.58), and was second (50.48) in the 100 Free. The boys also earned points from Adams, fourth (1:08.47) in the 100 Back, and sixth (1:03.60) in the 100 Free in individual events, while the 400 Free relay of Adams, Dustin Gregory, Allison, and Addy placed sixth (4:39.05).

Boys Basketball

Rosecrans 52, Cols. Tree of Life 35: Tyler Bernett hit a trio of 3s in the first quarter and Grady Labishak scored a game-high 17 points in the Bishops' nonleague win at the Berne Union Holiday Showcase in Sugar Grove.

Rosecrans (4-2) hit 13 of 28 field goals in the first half and outscored Tree of Life (4-1), 21-9, on 3-pointers. The Bishops led 35-16 at the half and 43-24 entering the fourth.

Bernett finished with 11 points and Brendan Bernath eight. Bernath and Labishak also had six rebounds.

Crooksville 54, Granville Christian 31: Konlan McIntyre led a balanced Ceramics (2-4) attack with 16 points in a nonleague win in McLuney.

Six of McIntyre's points came in a six-point third quarter when Crooksville outscored the visitors, 15-5, to take a 39-15 lead.

Jace Thompson scored nine of his 13 points in the first half and Parker Addington had seven of his 10 markers after halftime. Ryan Taylor had six points.

Bentley Johnson scored 12 points and Thad Henshorn seven for GC (5-2), which managed only 11 first-half points.

Girls Basketball

New Lexington 52, Zanesville 31: Abby Wilson and Chloe Dick combined for 10 first-quarter points as the visiting Panthers (6-4) rolled to a nonleague win at Winland Memorial Gymnasium.

Wilson had 13 of her game-high 20 points in the first half and Dick had 12 of her 18 in the same span. New Lex had leads of 23-4 after a quarter and 33-12 at the hallf.

Taelyn Dickinson and Rylee McCuen scored six points for Zanesville (1-9), which had nine players score.

Beaver Local 39, Cambridge 37: The Lady Bobcats dropped a tight 39-37 decision to the Lady Beavers in Buckeye 8 action on Thursday night in the Gene Ford Gymnasium at Cambridge High School.

Beaver Local jumped out to an 8-3 after the opening quarter, before the Lady 'Cats stormed back to tie the score at 13-13 at the half. Seniors Jada Hall drained a three-point goal and Kiara Murphy made three free throws while Destiny Garcia and Eva Lamphear each scored a basket to lead the rally.

Beaver Local got a game high 25 points from Peyton Roberts to lead the way, with 16 of her points coming in the second half.

Junior Emma Krise tallied 16 points to lead Cambridge, with Lamphear adding eight and Murphy chipping in with seven markers.

Cambridge slips to 3-9 for the season and returns to action next Thursday at Harrison Central.

Newark Catholic 59, Rosecrans 17: The Bishops dropped a nonleague game on the road.

Special Olympics Basketball

Guernsey County Eagles 39, Coshocton Hopewell Indians 29: The Guernsey County Eagles collected the first win of the season over the visiting Indians on Tuesday at Cambridge Middle School.

Robert Covington led the Eagles with 28 points, with J.J. Raine added seven. Kyle Jones and Allen Hofacker each scored two points,

Guernsey County returns to action on Tuesday, January 2 with a home game with Jefferson County at Cambridge Middle School at 7 p.m.
