Thrilling start to Cross-Country season
Aug. 29—KILLDEER — By all accounts, it was a good day in Killdeer late last week on Friday, Aug. 25 to open the cross-country season for Trinity's Titans and other area teams at the Killdeer Early Bird Meet, as cool temperatures and a solid breeze was a pleasant contributor "on a course featuring a few good hills," according to Trinity head coach Tim Baustian.
The varsity boys matchup featured a wild contest between New Town and Bowman, with Bowman finishing strong. The girls had the home team doing really well individually at the top as Addie Miller led from start to finish and earned a time of 12:06.34.
Baustian added that the junior varsity girls' race was Trinity's introduction to the cross country scene, as eighth-grader Celine Lefor took home a first-place ribbon with a 13:49.12. The team, despite only having three competing on the day, placed fourth out of 15 teams in the division, which is a great way to start.
The JV boys' race saw freshman Landon Knote taking third-place at 12:28.87. Junior Alex Keller also finished in the top-10, and as a team the boys finished second out of 17 teams in the division. The sixth-grade race was won by Jace Weidner.
"A strong start considering we were just trying to get things figured out," Baustian said. "We are slowly forming a good team core, and hopefully we can get better as we put on the miles."
Other area runners who contributed on the junior varsity side were Beach's Gavin Farstveet, who earned first for the boys' team with a time of 12:10.5 and Bowman County's Brayden Williams, who came in at a fourth-place 12:34.41.
For the girls' JV, BCHS's Jordyn Honeyman took second in their race with a 13:53.41 and her teammates Jaylee Fischer and Teagan Homelvig timed in at 14:12.5 and 14:26, respectively, at fifth- and sixth-place.
In the girls' varsity race, other area top-10 finishers included Abby Hardersen of Killdeer with a 12:32.97, good enough for second, and third-place Jaci Fischer of Bowman County with a time of 12:41.72. Her teammate Landyn Gerbig came in at number-four with a 12:52.28 mark, BCHS's Anna Sarsland timed in at an eighth-place 13:19.5 and Hettinger-Scranton's Kayla Schauer took 10th with a time of 13:29.69.
For the boys' varsity event, area top-10 finishers included Bulldogs standout Taylor Wanner, who took the blue-ribbon with a remarkable 9:44.31 and his teammate Jonah Njos with a third-place 10:20.59. Killdeer's Jekori Dahlen found his way to fourth with a solid 10:35.03,, and Bowman County's Gavin Lambourn earned an eighth-place 10:56.68 with fellow Bulldogs Noah Njos taking ninth in 11:00.5.
