Three of South Shore's top high school programs announce hirings of new coaches

Two South Shore high schools have announced the hiring of three new coaches.

Hingham announced its new soccer coaches (April Tremante as the new girls coach, David Leahy as the new boys coach). Earlier in the day, Archbishop Williams named Sarah Behn as its next girls basketball coach. All three programs have been among the area's most successful this century.

Hingham girls soccer has won four state titles since 2014, including a three-peat from 2014-2016. Ken Carlin retired as Hingham boys soccer coach in the fall after leading the program to 322 wins and 11 league titles over his 25 seasons. His teams never missed the state tournament during his tenure.

Archbishop Williams girls basketball has won seven state titles, including six from 2007-2018.

Sarah Behn comes from Brown

Behn comes to Braintree after spending time as the head coach of the women's basketball teams at UMass-Lowell and Brown. She played professionally in Europe after authoring a hall of fame career at Boston College.

She coached at the high school level at Foxboro and North Attleboro. She replaces Matt Mahoney, who retired following the winter.

"I look forward to building upon the strong foundation that is already in place and helping our student-athletes reach their full potential both on and off the court," Behn, a Foxboro High grad, said in a press release from the school.

"With a commitment to excellence, Coach Behn brings a wealth of experience and a passion for developing young female athletes," said Dr. Michael Volonnino. "I am confident that under her able leadership, our team will continue to grow and achieve great success on and off the court.”

New eras at Hingham

To replace Carlin, Hingham did not have to look far. Leahy was an assistant on Carlin's staff for the past two seasons. He brings 23 years of coaching experience to the sidelines with stops at The Winchendon School, Thayer Academy and Whitman-Hanson Regional, along with club experience.

"I have always admired the passion, athleticism, camaraderie and intelligence that are hallmarks of Hingham soccer," Leahy, who played at Thayer and then at Hobart & William Smith Colleges, said in a release from the school. "I am beyond excited to continue upholding these values with this program."

"We are extremely fortunate to have a coach with the level of experience and familiarity with our student-athletes that Coach Leahy has," Hingham High athletic director Jim Quatromoni said. "We are looking forward to seeing him embrace his new role with our program and helping our student-athletes achieve the best versions of themselves on and off of the field."

Tremante was a scholarship player during her playing days at Boston College, eventually serving as the team's captain. She was most recently an assistant coach at Duxbury High. She previously was the head coach at Weston High in Connecticut.

"Hingham has historically been a strong program with competitive players," said Tremante in a release from the school. "I am looking forward to the chance to continue the tradition and positive culture in this great community."
