Three 2023 prospects to watch for Texas after Arch Manning’s commitment

Five-star quarterback Arch Manning has been the most important recruit for Texas football in 2023.

Manning is the consensus No. 1 recruit for the 2023 class and the only quarterback that Texas extended an offer to this cycle.

Fortunately for the Longhorns, Manning officially announced his commitment to Texas on Thursday via Twitter. Now many believe it’s the first of many commitments for Steve Sarkisian and his staff.

Of the many positions that could benefit from Manning’s commitment, wide receiver most stands out. Four-star Jaquaize Pettaway was rumored to be favoring Oklahoma yesterday, now one has to wonder if Manning’s commitment will sway Pettaway from the Sooners. Four-star Jonah Wilson already had several 247Sports crystal ball predictions in favor of Texas, those odds have likely only increased.

Although many highly rated prospects are likely to express interest in Texas following Manning’s announcement, let’s focus on the three 2023 prospects that Texas could land a commitment from in the very near future.

Five-star WR Johntay Cook II

The Desoto star received three crystal ball predictions from 247Sports on Thursday, including one by reputable source, Steve Wiltfong. Cook has been flirting with joining the Longhorns and has to be toward the top of Sarkisian’s wish list. The five-star recruit is the No. 6 wide receiver in the country according to 247Sports composite rankings.

Four-star RB Cedric Baxter Jr.

247Sports national recruiting expert Steve Wiltfong put in another crystal ball prediction for Baxter, the elite running back from Florida. Texas appeared to have shifted its pursuit from Rueben Owens long before Owens committed to Louisville. Baxter is the No. 2 running back in the country for the 2023 class, according to 247Sports.

Four-star ATH Mikal Harrison-Pilot

Three 247Sports crystal ball predictions came in today for the temple speedster following Arch Manning’s commitment. Harrison-Pilot has not been shy about his admiration of the Texas program and could pull the trigger soon in favor of Texas. Harrison is the No. 9 athlete in the country for the 2023 class, according to 247Sports composite rankings.
