Texico erases seven-run deficit for win

Mar. 30—LAS VEGAS, N.M. — Senior Daltyn Cain's two-run single capped a three-run sixth and Texico, down by seven runs early, held on to edge East Mountain 10-9 on Friday in the consolation semifinals of an eight-team tournament hosted by West Las Vegas H.S.

East Mountain (6-6) led 8-1 after the second inning, but Texico (2-3) put together three-run innings in the third, fourth and sixth to win it. Senior Erik Davalos pitched the final three innings for the Wolverines for the win, allowing three hits and no runs with two walks and five strikeouts.

Davalos and Cain each had three hits for Texico, with Cain hitting a pair of doubles and scoring once and Davalos adding a double while scoring twice and driving in a run.

Junior Edgar Mendoza was 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored, while senior Easton Cooper and sophomore Bryce Cooper were both 2-for-3. Sophomore Ty Rector led the Timberwolves, going 3-for-4 and scoring twice.

In other Friday action:

Melrose 10, Roswell High JV 5 — In New Mexico Military's Colt Classic at Roswell, the Buffaloes bounced back from a season-opening, first-round loss to top the Coyotes.

Senior Michael Cardonita and junior Briar Larson were both 2-for-4 with a triple, two RBIs and two runs scored, while junior Cy Draper went 2-for-4 with a two-run single and a run scored. Senior Dathan Yeary pitched into the seventh, allowing six hits with three walks and 11 strikeouts, before Larson took over an ended the Coyotes' four-run rally by getting the final out.

Sophomore Luke Lynn went 3-for-4 with a run and two RBIs for Roswell High (2-8-2).

Also on Friday, Grady improved to 4-0 for the season with a 16-6, 13-11 doubleheader sweep of Class 3A Hot Springs (2-6) at Truth or Consequences.

In Thursday baseball games:

Grady 6, Tularosa 4 — Senior Xavier Romero hit a tie-breaking, two-run triple in the top of the seventh to lift the Bronchos past the host Wildcats.

Grady built a 4-0 lead through three innings, but Tularosa (1-3) tied the score with three runs in the fourth and one in the fifth.

Freshman Andre Garcia went 2-for-4 with an RBI for Grady. Senior Zane Rush struck out eight over the first 3 2/3 innings before giving way to junior Deakin Ragland, who fanned four over the final 3 1/3 frames.

Tularosa had five hits, with seniors Anthony Paz and Ricky Bryant each going 2-for-4.

Taos 16, Texico 4 — At West Las Vegas, the Tigers (5-4) put together a six run first and an eight-run third in beating the Wolverines in four innings, the game halted by the tournament's 12-run rule after four.

Texico jumped on top with a three-run first. The Wolverines finished with two hits — singles by senior Erik Davalos and freshman Gavin Reese.

Roswell Goddard JV 14, Melrose 0 — In the NMMI tournament, the Rockets broke open the game with a six run third and added five in the fourth. The contest ended after five on the 10-run rule.

Freshmen Airell Aguilar and Ayden Luck led the way for the Goddard JV (11-3), both going 2-for-3. Aguilar had a triple, two runs scored and two RBIs while Luck scored twice and knocked in one.

Larson had a single for the Buffaloes' only hit.

In Tuesday action:

Logan 26, Floyd 1 — The host Longhorns (1-1) scored 10 runs in the second and eight in the third en route to a five-inning, run-rule win over the Broncos (0-1).

Logan had 20 hits, led by juniors Diego Sanchez and Jace Jackson, who were both 4-for-5. They combined to score seven runs and knock in five.

Junior Jimmy Lovato had Floyd's only hit, a second-inning single, and he scored the Broncos' lone run later in the frame.

In another Tuesday tilt, Elida (0-2) dropped a 17-4 decision at Capitan (2-2).

In Friday softball action:

Dora 29-20, Logan 23-13 — At Logan, the Lady Coyotes improved to 3-1 in a pair of high-scoring tilts. The second game was called after five innings due to darkness.

In Game 1, junior Justice Deason went 5-for-6 with a triple and four RBIs while senior Bre'Ann Rodriguez finished 4-for 6 with two doubles, a triple and five RBIs and freshman Karen Inge was 4-for-6 with a pair of doubles and one run batted in.

For Logan (0-2), senior Bella Corona had two hits, four walks and five runs scored, while junior Marily Moreno was 2-for-3 with a double, a triple and three walks.

In Game 2, Rodriguez was 4-for-5 with a double, a triple and five RBIs, Inge went 3-for-4 with four runs and two RBIs and senior Faith Jasso was 3-for-5 with three runs and three RBIs. Meantime, Moreno and Coronado each doubled and finished with two hits for the Lady Longhorns.
