Texas and Texas A&M assistant coaches ejected from NCAA Softball Tournament over dispute
Texas and Texas A&M don't need many reasons to have animosity with each other, but a few ejections don't hurt.
Texas assistant Steve Singleton and A&M assistant Russ Heffley were ejected from Friday's game with A&M leading 6-0 in the top of the 6th inning. Heffley took exception with how Longhorns first baseman Katie Stewart had her foot on the bag, as Kennedy Powell tripped over Stewart's shin and sent her tumbling.
Heffley immediately went to the diamond yelling, while Singleton went to confront him. The umpire ejected both of them though the players themselves did not confront each other. Despite the distraction, Texas was able to end its shutout as Victoria Hunter mashed a grand slam to make it 6-4 heading into the seventh.
A former shortstop and second basemen for the Minnesota Twins, Singleton originally joined the Longhorns staff as an assistant coach on July 1, 2019 and was promoted to associate head coach in 2022.
This isn't the first time that Singleton has gotten heated during a game. During the Women's College World Series in 2022, he got upset with an umpire after he refused to give Singleton Mia Scott's home run ball.
