Texas teen fatally hit by truck on the first day of school

A Texas high school football player was fatally hit by a truck while riding his bicycle Wednesday morning, just before dawn on the first day of school.

Landon Bourque, 15, was struck as he tried to cross Independence Parkway in Frisco, about 30 miles north of Dallas, the McKinney Police Department said in a Facebook post.

“The driver stopped and rendered aid but the victim did not survive. This is an ongoing investigation,” they added. “Our hearts go out to everyone involved in this tragedy.”

Bourque was a sophomore at Heritage High School, the Frisco Independent School District confirmed to NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth. He also played for the Heritage Coyotes, whose players were being dropped off around the time of the accident, parents told the outlet.

Bourque “was always trying to be happy, always trying to lighten the mood. He never really brought anyone down. He was just someone I was glad to have around,” friend Nolan Swyres told the outlet.

Kenneth Gilchrist, the school’s head football coach, remembered Bourque as “an extremely hard-working young man and incredible teammate.”

“His dedication and unselfishness made everyone better around him and we will remember him as the young man who always had a smile on his face,” Gilchrist said in a statement to The Dallas Morning News.

Counselors were present on campus in the aftermath of the accident, Frisco ISD told the paper.

The area of Independence Parkway on which Bourque was killed has “a speeding problem,” local Casey Bates told the outlet.

Authorities on Thursday told The Dallas Morning News that they could not elaborate on whether they will be filing charges, but the investigation remains underway.
