Texas Tech's Anastacia Chepkorir gets 3rd in weather delayed Big 12 track and field meet
For two days in a row, patience has been key for coaches and athletes involved in the Big 12 outdoor track and field championships in Waco.
Trey Wilson met the challenge and delivered a lifetime best.
In an event that started at 11 p.m. Friday, the Texas Tech freshman threw the shot put 63 feet, 6 1/4 inches, a personal record that moved him from sixth place to fourth on his last attempt at Clyde Hart Stadium.
The Texas Tech men, trying to sweep the conference indoor and outdoor championships for the second year in a row, have 13 points with six of 21 events scored. Others came from freshman Ernest Cheruiyot, who finished fourth in the 10,000 meters with a time of 29 minutes, 21.67 seconds, and senior Konner Wood, who took sixth in the hammer throw with a personal record of 206 feet even. Both their events were Thursday.
The meet was stopped a little after 7 p.m. Friday for rain and lightning in the area, the second day in a row with weather interruptions. The estimated time to resume was 9:30 p.m., but then another weather stoppage pushed back the time further. When the all-clear was given, event start times ranged from 11 p.m. to midnight.
The three-day meet at Clyde Hart Stadium is scheduled to conclude Saturday.
The Tech women have 13 points, all from freshmen, through five of 21 events. Anastacia Chepkorir placed third in the 10,000 meters (34:48.13) on Thursday night. In the javelin early Friday, Kyeese Hollands (165-4) and Leah Howard (164-4) were fifth and sixth, respectively.
