Texas Tech baseball takeaways: Welcoming back Jack Washburn, Owen Washburn

ARLINGTON — The Texas Tech baseball team's work at Globe Life Field isn't done, but the Red Raiders have more than usual to show for their early season excursions to the Texas Rangers' stadium.

No. 22 Tech beat Oregon 11-7 on Sunday, using a six-run second inning that Austin Green capped with a three-run homer. Damian Bravo drove in three runs with three doubles, and Tracer Lopez delivered two with a sacrifice fly and a homer.

Before Texas Tech beat Nebraska 6-3 Saturday, the Red Raiders had lost six of their previous seven in February games at Globe Life Park.

Tech remains in town to play Texas-Arlington at 6 p.m. Tuesday and No. 7 Oregon State at noon Wednesday.

Some takeaways from Sunday:

Austin Green, have a weekend

The Red Raiders' second baseman-turned-right fielder showed up in all three games of the weekend, starting with a couple of sparkling defensive plays in Friday's loss to Tennessee. On Saturday, he had a run-scoring single in a three-run ninth and Sunday he went 3 for 5 with four RBI.

Jack Washburn, at long last

Starting pitcher Jack Washburn appeared in a college game for the first time in almost 20 months, and his Texas Tech debut went well. The brother of Tech outfielder Owen Washburn threw a scoreless first four innings with six strikeouts, his fastball sitting from 88-91 mph.

The first three Oregon batters reached against Washburn in the fifth, and all three wound up scoring. That made his final line four innings-plus with three earned runs on six hits.

The second-year transfer from Mississippi last pitched in a college game on June 22, 2022, in the College World Series. He transferred to Tech and sat out last year because of a fractured scapula.

Globe Life Field suits Owen Washburn

When Washburn singled in his first at-bat Sunday, it gave him five hits in his first eight at-bats this season. That's encouraging, given he's coming back from an injury-shortened 2023 season.

It also added to Washburn's career résumé at Globe Life Field. In the same event two years ago, playing in his first college game, Washburn had a game-winning single to beat Michigan 7-6. That capped a 3-for-4 night in which he also walked twice.

In three games that weekend, he was 4 for 10 with four walks and five runs scored. In three games this weekend, he was 6 for 12 with three runs scored.
