Texas' Micah Braswell among Longhorns to advance in NCAA tennis tournament

Texas men’s tennis player Micah Braswell advanced to the round of 16 during Tuesday’s NCAA Singles Championships at the Greenwood Tennis Center in Stillwater, Okla.

Seeded fifth, Braswell cruised past Kentucky’s Taha Baadi 6-1, 6-3. He’ll face Filip Planinsek of Alabama on Wednesday for a spot in the quarterfinals.

In doubles play, Eliot Spizzirri and Cleeve Harper also advanced to the quarterfinals with a thrilling 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (8) win over the Boston College tandem of JJ Bianchi and Jake Vassel. They’ll face Wake Forest’s Holden Koons and Dhakshineswar Suresh in the quarterfinals in a rematch of a contest Spizzirri and Harper during during the team tennis tournament.

Texas women's tennis team end season

The Texas women’s tennis season ended Tuesday when Malaika Rapolu fell in the round of 32 in singles play as well as in doubles play with partner Tanya Sasnouskaya.

Seeded No. 20, Rapolu put up a fight before falling to second-seeded Amelia Rajecki of North Carolina State 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. In the doubles match, Rapolu and Sasnouskaya were defeated by Victoria Allen and Amelia Bissett of Florida State 6-3, 6-4.

The doubles match ended impressive Texas careers for Rapolu and Sasnouskaya. A first-team All-Big 12 selection in both singles and doubles this year, Rapolu has been a significant piece to a remarkable run of success over the last four years at Texas that included back-to-back national championships in 2021 and 2022. For her career, Rapolu registered 139 total wins with 100 in singles and 39 in doubles, including a 36-7 overall singles record and 18-3 in dual matches this year. She also had a 25-12 mark in doubles and paired with Sasnouskaya to win 12 of their last 14 matches.

A graduate transfer from Old Dominion, Sasnouskaya finished her one season at Texas with first-team All-Big 12 honors in doubles and second-team accolades in singles. She posted overall records of 22-14 in singles and 22-13 in doubles, while going 14-7 in singles dual matches.
