Texas A&M-Commerce cagers to play at Southeastern Louisiana

Jan. 19—Southland Conference play in basketball is to continue on Saturday at Hammond, Louisiana for the 8-7 Texas A&M University-Commerce women and 6-10 Lion men.

The women are to play Southeastern Louisiana at 1 p.m. in the University Center while the men's game is to follow at 3:30 p.m.

The Lion women are 3-2 in conference play after handing Lamar its first conference loss, 73-70 in Beaumont on Thursday night.

The Lion women went up 66-65 on Lamar with a shot by Mia Deck with 2:35 remaining and preserved their lead by going 5-of-6 from the free throw line in the final 17 seconds. Jordyn Newsome, Ahmya Boyce and Deck made the free throws.

Boyce, who was 10-of-10 from the line, led the Lions and all scorers with 27 points.

Deck finished with 16 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Newsome scored 12 points.

Akasha Davis doubled up for Lamar with 21 points and 18 rebounds. Sabria Dean added 14 points as Lamar dropped to 10-5 for the season and 4-1 in the conference.

Southeastern Louisiana's women are 9-7 for the season and 5-0 in conference play following a 55-48 home win over Northwestern State.

Hailey Giaratano led the Lady Lions with 23 points and six rebounds. Jalencia Pierre was next with eight points.

The two women's teams have played only three times and Southeastern Louisiana leads the series 3-0, including a 60-58 win over the Lions in the semifinals of the Southland Conference tournament last year.

The Lion men haven't played since falling 69-65 to Houston Christian on Jan. 13 in Commerce. Their scheduled game at Incarnate Word on Monday in San Antonio was postponed until Jan. 31 due to inclement weather.

The Lions are still looking for their first conference win after falling 73-67 at home to McNeese and 88-85 at New Orleans.

Southeastern Louisiana's men are 6-11 overall and 1-3 in the conference. The other Lions opened conference play with a 73-68 win at New Orleans and then have lost 66-61 to Nicholls, 74-65 to McNeese and 73-68 to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.

Southeastern spread the scoring against A&M-Corpus Christi around to Roger McFarlane (18), Nick Caldwell (16), Roscoe Eastmond (14) and Alec Woodard (13).

Jerome Brewer Jr. and Kalen Williams are both averaging 14.1 points per game to lead the Lions and Tommie Lewis is average 10.8. Brewer is the top rebounder at 4.6 per game and Lewis averages 4.3.

Southeastern Louisiana leads the series with the Lions 3-0, including a 78-76 overtime win at Commerce last year.

KETR-FM (88.9) plans to broadcast both games.
