The No. 7 Texas Longhorns will have to face BYU in Week 9 without their starting quarterback, Quinn Ewers. Ewers sustained a grade 2 AC joint sprain in his throwing shoulder during the third quarter of their game against Houston and is on a week-to-week basis on when he will return. Fortunately, it's not expected to be a season-ending injury.

Maalik Murphy, the redshirt freshman quarterback, completed 1-of-2 attempts for seven yards, helping the Longhorns secure a 31-24 win against Houston.

“I thought Maalik showed great poise and composure,” Texas coach Steve Sarkisian said to the media on Monday. “I know he will prepare really well and I think he’ll play good football. And I think Arch will be ready.”

In case of need, Arch Manning, who is the third-string quarterback for Texas, will replace Murphy. Arch Manning is the nephew of Peyton and Eli Manning, and he was ranked No. 5 in the 2023 ESPN 300 recruits. He is expected to play for Texas next year as they join the SEC.

BYU is coming off a 27-14 win over Texas Tech and improved their record to 5-2 but know that Texas will be a tough challenge even with their backup quarterback. Texas will be the first ranked opponent BYU faces since joining the Big 12.
