Unable to find an answer for the pitching of Luke Holman on Friday, No. 15 Texas opened its weekend with a 6-3 loss to No. 3 LSU.

The defeat came in the first of three games Texas will play in the Astros Foundation College Classic at Minute Maid Park in Houston. Texas (7-2) and Texas State (6-3) were scheduled to meet at 3 p.m. Saturday, and the Longhorns are set to face Vanderbilt at 11 a.m. Sunday.

Texas struck out 12 times against Holman. The junior right-hander allowed just three hits to UT senior Peyton Powell over his 5 2/3 innings. Texas did not score when Holman was in the game.

Texas eventually struck out 20 times against Holman, Nate Ackenhausen and Fidel Ulloa. The Longhorns last struck out that many times in 2021.

Like Holman, Texas starter Lebarron Johnson Jr., threw 91 pitches Friday. But Johnson was pulled with no outs in the fourth inning, and he allowed four hits, three walks and two runs.

Johnson was one of six pitchers used by Texas, which served up two homers to LSU (9-1). Tanner Witt pitched two innings of one-hit, two-walk relief for the Longhorns.

Texas still holds a 28-15-1 lead in its all-time series with LSU. The Longhorns and Tigers have split the 10 games they've played since 2018.
