Texans zeroing in on Ravens’ David Culley as new head coach
It appears as if the Baltimore Ravens will have a few more coaching vacancies to fill this offseason. According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero and ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Houston Texans are working toward a deal to make Ravens’ David Culley their newest head coach.
This will be Culley’s first head coaching job but it’s not for a lack of experience and respect. Culley had been the assistant head coach under John Harbaugh with the Ravens and under Andy Reid with the Kansas City Chiefs. Both Harbaugh and Reid have long track records of success, including plenty of playoff berths and even a few Super Bowl rings between them.
Culley had been hired by Baltimore in 2019 to be the wide receivers coach and pass coordinator. But it would appear Houston isn’t hiring him for his production with the Ravens. Baltimore finished this season last in pass attempts and passing yards while ranking 17th in passing DVOA. Still, Culley getting hired would continue a string of coaching losses for the Ravens this offseason, joining defensive coaches Jesse Minter, Mike Macdonald, and Joe Cullen.
If hired, Culley will be just the fourth head coach in Texans’ history, replacing Bill O’Brien, who had been fired after an 0-4 start to the season. Dom Capers was the team’s first, coaching the newly formed expansion team from their creation in 2002-2005. Former Ravens offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak was Houston’s head coach from 2006-2013 before O’Brien took over in 2014.
