Texans training camp observations: Davis Mills’ next step coming slowly

The Houston Texans were back on the practice field on Tuesday, preparing for their second preseason game against the Los Angeles Rams this Friday at SoFi Stadium.

Here are a couple of observations from Day 11 of Texans Training Camp:

Heating up

The sun wasn’t the only thing heating the practice field at the Methodist Training Center on Tuesday. The offense and defense took turns talking trash during individual and team drills.

During one period where the offensive and defensive lineman went one-on-one, a shoving match broke out between Scott Quessenberry and Damion Daniels.

Daniels, a rookie from Nebraska, took exception to how he was being blocked by Quessenberry during a rep and shoved the former Los Angeles Charger offensive lineman. Players from both sides stepped in, but not before the two were in each other’s faces exchanging pleasantries with one another.

It is hard to give a regular season prediction on what second-year quarterback Davis Mills is going to become. He has the physical tools and football IQ to be very good; he must put it all together this season.

While leading the individual passing drill with the wide receivers, Mills threw a pass to Brandin Cooks down the middle of the field into the end zone, and immediately when he caught the pass, Cooks screamed out, “Too flat!”

That was a message to Mills that if there had been a defender on Cooks, he would have either intercepted the pass or knocked it out of the air.

When the team was going through their first 11-on-11 period, Moments later, Mills put too much air on the ball and overthrew a wide-open Cooks. That infuriated first-year offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton, who shouted to Mills, “Davis, what did we just talk about on the other field?”

If corrections are to be made with Mills, training camp is the place to do it, but it has to be done quickly as the Texans’ season-opener against the Indianapolis Colts is not too far off.

After testing positive for COVID-19 and missing the preseason opener against the New Orleans Saints, backup quarterback Kyle Allen returned to the practice field and took reps with the second unit.

Rookies Christian Harris (hamstring) and Kenyon Green (concussion protocol) did not practice. Green was in attendance, watching from the sidelines as he continuously learns the Texans’ offensive system.

Receiver Chester Rogers was in full pads and participated in individual drills on Tuesday. The former Tennessee Titans player had been sidelined with an injury since the Texans acquired him on Aug. 2.
