Texans GM Nick Caserio says defensive line has been ‘fairly consistent’

The Houston Texans are bereft of consistency, but there still are position groups on the team that have been exemplary.

General manager Nick Caserio joined Texans Radio on Wednesday and talked with play-by-play voice Marc Vandermeer and sideline reporter John Harris about the state of the team as they have the week off with a 1-8 record. One group that Caserio pointed out for being consistent is the defensive line.

“Collectively as a group they’ve been fairly consistent from the beginning to where we are now,” said Caserio. “Wherever we’ve played, we’ve taken sometimes eight, sometimes nine, seven, eight players to the game on a regular basis. They all play about call it 30-35 plays each snap. So, when they’re in there, the good thing is when you have players who are comfortable to put on the field, they are going to play as hard as they can and you’re going to put the next group of players in there.”

Second-year defensive end Jonathan Greenard has been the poster boy for the success the defensive line has had. The former third-round pick has generated 7.0 sacks, nine tackles for loss, nine quarterback hits, three pass breakups, and a forced fumble through seven games, all of which he has started.

“Fortunately, they’ve been productive with those snaps,” Caserio said. “It’s one thing to just play a bunch of guys, but it’s another thing to play a number of players and have them have production that commensurate. So, you know, it’s a great group.”

Caserio also lauded the work of defensive line coach Bobby King and assistant defensive line coach Allen Smith.

“Hopefully, their performance can continue here as we move forward,” said Caserio.

The Texans get back in action on Nov. 21 when they take on the Tennessee Titans at Nissan Stadium.
