Texans cornerback Tavierre Thomas agrees to 1-year deal with Bucs
TAMPA — The Bucs’ trade of starting cornerback Carlton Davis to the Lions last week created a void that will be filled by Zyon McCollum.
But that meant there would be an opening or two for some much-needed depth in the secondary.
The Bucs continued to fortify their defensive backfield Monday by agreeing to terms on a one-year contract with Texans free agent Tavierre Thomas. He will compete with Christian Izien for the nickel cornerback spot.
The 28-year-old Thomas played nine games for Houston last season, starting five. He had 51 tackles, 30 solo, two forced fumbles and one pass defensed.
Thomas is the second free-agent cornerback to join the Bucs since the trade of Davis, joining former Jet Bryce Hall. Tampa Bay also signed ex-Jets safety Jordan Whitehead.
Thomas had a good game last season in the Bucs’ 39-37 loss to the Texans in Houston. He led the team with 10 tackles, including six solo stops and one tackle for loss.
The 5-foot-10, 205-pounder entered the league with the Cardinals in 2018 as an undrafted free agent out of Ferris State.
Thomas played three seasons with the Browns and three more with the Texans. He suffered a hamstring injury in December and finished the 2023 season on injured reserve.
