Tennessee Titans designate Derrick Henry to return to practice from injured reserve

Derrick Henry is back.

To practice at least.

The Tennessee Titans designated the star running back to return to practice from injured reserve, the team announced Wednesday. The move opens his 21-day window to be activated.

It was expected that Henry would return to practice Wednesday, with a source telling The Tennessean on Tuesday that it was “trending that way.” Coach Mike Vrabel also said Monday there were discussions about opening the All-Pro running back’s practice window this week.

It’s unclear whether Henry will play for the Titans (11-5) in the regular-season finale against the Texans (4-12) on Sunday at NRG Stadium, in which Tennessee can secure the AFC’s top seed and first-round bye with a win. The Titans could just wait to activate him for the playoffs, giving him more time to rest.

Henry has been on IR since Nov. 1, one day after suffering and playing through a foot injury in Week 8 against the Colts. He had surgery Nov. 2.

Despite missing the last eight games, Henry ranks sixth in the NFL in both rushing yards (937) and rushing touchdowns (10). Playing Sunday would give him the chance to top 1,000 yards rushing for the fourth straight season.

The Titans on Wednesday also signed tight end Ryan Izzo to their 53-man roster, adding depth at the position following MyCole Pruitt’s placement on injured reserve Monday. A 2018 seventh-round pick of the Patriots, the 6-foot-5, 255-pound Izzo had 19 receptions for 313 yards and a touchdown in 18 games with New England (2019-20). He was most recently on the Seahawks’ practice squad.
