Tekonsha's Veenkant records two home runs in big win; Union City splits with Galesburg

TEKONSHA – Tekonsha’s Bo Veenkant accomplished a rare feat on Thursday night, as he not only recorded a pair of home runs, but a pair of inside-the-park home runs.

Tekonsha’s offense was humming from the first pitch Thursday night as the Indians out hit Waldron 18-1 in a 20-0 rout.

Veenkant’s first home run came in the top of the first inning with two men on, as a hot shot to right field allowed Jacob Bailey, Marco Sanchez, and Veenkant to score, pushing the Tekonsha lead to 9-0.

After a two run second inning pushed the Tekonsha lead to 11-0, Veenkant opened up the top of the third inning with another inside-the-park home run, this time to deep centerfield, extending the lead to 12-0. Tekonsha went on to score eight more runs to put the game away, taking the 20-0 win.

Blake Griffith took the win on the mound for Tekonsha after throwing an inning and a third in the start, giving up one hit with four strikeouts.

Veenkant led the offensive effort, finishing 3-for-5 with two home runs, five RBIs, and three runs scored.

Dylan Griffith also had a big day at the plate, going 4-for-4 with two doubles, two RBIs, and two runs scored. Bo Begley was also perfect at the plate, finishing 3-for-3 with an RBI and three runs scored while Ashton White finished 2-for-3 with a double, three RBIs, and two runs scored. Sanchez also had a multi-hit game, adding an RBI and three runs scored.

Union City splits with Galesburg in non-conference baseball battle

UNION CITY – The Union City Chargers battled to a hard-earned split with non-conference opponent Galesburg Augusta Thursday night, falling in game one by the score of 12-1 before taking game two 7-2.

Game one saw the Galesburg defense stymie the Charger offense, as seven total Union City hits only led to a single run. Galesburg out hit Union City 17-7 and took advantage of four Charger fielding errors.

Carson Liles took the loss on the mound for Union City after throwing three innings in relief, allowing seven hits and five runs with two walks and two strikeouts.

Ryan Zweng packed the big bat, hitting his second home run of the season which accounted for Union City’s only run, a solo shot to left field in the third inning.

Willie Dunn notched a double for Union City while Liles added a single and Alex Boyer added two hits.

Game two of the twin bill saw the bat of Owen Jackson and solid all-around defense lead the Chargers to the 7-2 win.

Union City opened a 7-0 lead and held off a Galesburg rally that only yielded two runs in the sixth inning to find the final score of 7-2.

Jackson took the win on the mound for Union City after throwing seven full innings, allowing eight hits and two runs with one walk and five strikeouts. Jackson led the way with the bat as well, finishing 3 for 5 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored.

Ryan Zweng continued his red-hot hitting streak, finishing 2 for 2 with two walks and two runs scored while Boyer, Ethan Neveraski, and Brody Taylor all added singles. Aidan Decker, Rick Austin and Neveraski all chipped in with RBIs.
