Tamin Lipsey, Hason Ward exit with injuries in Iowa State basketball's NCAA Tournament win

Late in No. 2 seed Iowa State basketball's dominant 82-65 win over No. 15 seed South Dakota State in the first round of the 2024 NCAA Tournament on Thursday, the Cyclones saw two top players leave the game with injuries.

First, starting guard Tamin Lipsey appeared to tweak his left (non-shooting) shoulder when deflecting a loose ball, which forced him out of the game to receive treatment on the sideline during the game's final minutes.

Although the play appeared mundane and Lipsey never went to the locker room for extensive evaluation, his discomfort was visible. It also occurred to the same shoulder that he sprained in January of this season, which forced him to miss one game and has caused soreness since then.

Lipsey was having a terrific game with 17 points and seven assists.

A few plays after Lipsey exited the game, Hason Ward went down after trying to get rebounding position. The training staff briefly evaluated his left ankle before helping the senior forward limp to the bench.

The broadcast did not show a replay of what caused the injury to Ward, but he appeared able to put some weight on his left leg when walking off the court.

Ward was also enjoying a strong performance with 10 points and a pair of highlight dunks in the first half.

The good news for Cyclones fans is that Lipsey and Ward bith said after the game that they were fine, according to The Register's Travis Hines.
