Takeaways from Louisiana softball's win over ULM in Sun Belt Conference tournament

On this Thursday night, Louisiana softball wasn't in the mood for suspense.

And with the Sun Belt Conference's freshman of the year Mihyia Davis batting leadoff and as UL coach Gerry Glasco said there's about 13 players he feels good about, the Ragin' Cajuns take all the guesswork out.

Behind a leadoff hit, then subsequent steal of second from Davis, UL scored a run within minutes on Louisiana-Monroe en route to downing its instate rival 3-1 in the quarterfinals of the Sun Belt Conference Softball Tournament at Lamson Park.

Louisiana advanced to face Texas State Friday night at 7 p.m.

Normal starters Jourdyn Campbell and Stormy Kotzelnick were on the bench to open the game against ULM. By Glasco's design, he brought them both in to hit in the bottom of the fourth.

And both came through in a 1-1 ballgame. Campbell hit an RBI triple before Kotzelnick scored her on a sacrifice to break the game open for the Ragin' Cajuns.

Campbell reached her next time up on a hit-by-pitch.

Mihyia Davis is Ragin' Cajuns' X-factor in postseason

She's been showing it all season as a freshman, but Davis possesses the skill to cause any team problems.

Her efficiency in stealing bases (46-of-53) and on-base percentage (.427) applies pressure to defenses. Her batting average has steadily climbed since mid-April and when she'll be counted most in the postseason, despite her youth, she's delivering.

While Davis went 1-for-3 against the Warhawks, as hot as the centerfielder has been of late, her only reaching base once feels like an anomaly.

UL softball sweeps ULM for season

The Cajuns won all three games against the Warhawks to close out the regular season a little more than a week ago. The win in the Sun Belt tourney made it four straight victories against ULM this season.
