Super Bowl 2024 has Indiana college, high school connections

There's plenty of Super Bowl rooting interest for Indiana high school and college football fans. Each of the state's FBS programs, as well as three high schools, are represented on the rosters of the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers.

George Karlaftis, Chiefs linebacker, No. 56

Indiana connection: West Lafayette High School, Purdue

The second-year linebacker has made 14 tackles this postseason, including 2.5 sacks. He had a fumble recovery in the AFC Championship Game.

The 2022 first-round draft pick had 47 tackles in the regular season, including 10.5 sacks.

Drue Tranquill, Chiefs linebacker, No. 23

Indiana connection: Carroll (Fort Wayne) High School, Notre Dame

The fifth-year linebacker is in his first season in Kansas City after four with the Chargers.

He has 19 tackles in the playoffs. He had 78 in the regular season, including 4.5 sacks.

Tranquill said on a CBS Sports radio show last week that the team likes to have fun with Travis Kelce's romance with Taylor Swift.

“You don’t really feel it and hear too much of it inside the locker room," he said. "But it’ll be moments like at practice when … our DJ turns on a Taylor Swift song and everybody kind of jokes about it.”

Nic Jones, Chiefs cornerback, No. 31

Indiana connection: Ball State

The 7th-round rookie had 4 regular-season tackles and 2 in the playoffs.

Cam Jones, Chiefs linebacker, No. 44

Indiana connection: Indiana

The rookie linebacker made one tackle in Kansas City's playoff win over Miami before leaving with a season-ending chest injury.

He played primarily on special teams and had 17 tackles in the regular season.

Aaron Banks, 49ers offensive lineman, No. 65

Indiana connection: Notre Dame

The third-year left guard was a 2021 second-round draft pick. He has had 1 penalty in the playoffs and has not allowed a sack all season, according to Pro Football Focus.

Jalen Graham, 49ers linebacker, No. 50

Indiana connection: Purdue

The seventh-round rookie appeared in four regular-season games on special teams.

Randy Gregory, 49ers linebacker, No. 5

Indiana connection: Hamilton Southeastern High School

The reserve linebacker has 4 postseason tackles. Traded to San Francisco by Denver early in the season, Gregory had 11 tackles, including 2.5 sacks, in 12 regular-season games. Before the trade, he started three games for the Broncos.

Willie Snead IV, 49ers wide receiver, No. 83

Indiana connection: Ball State

The ninth-year receiver appeared in four regular-season games, with two catches for 14 yards. He was elevated from the practice squad for the NFC Championship Game but did not suit up.
