SUNY Oneonta, Hartwick men win soccer tourney openers

Oct. 30—The SUNY Oneonta men's soccer team held on for a 2-1 victory over SUNY Geneseo Saturday in the first round of the SUNYAC Tournament.

After a scoreless first half, Ian Zingaro opened the scoring in the 56th minute when he converted a penalty kick opportunity.

Ali Somow doubled the lead in the 69th minute on an unassisted goal.

Geneseo made things interesting when Jake DePaoli scored in the 75th minute but the Red Dragons were able to hang on for the win.

Nate Hanna made three saves as the winning keeper.

Oneonta (13-2-3) will visit SUNY Brockport for Wednesday's semifinal contest.

Hartwick 2, Utica 0 (Saturday)

The Hartwick men opened their Empire 8 Tournament slate with a 2-0 win over Utica Saturday.

The Hawks got on the board late in the first half when Timmy McQueeney scored in the 42nd minute off an assist by Sean Burke.

Kwame Amissah-Arthur added an insurance tally in the 88th minute with Daniel Kniffen providing an assist.

It was a very chippy affair with the two sides receiving a combined three red cards and five yellow cards.

Hartwick (8-4-4) will face Elmira Wednesday in the next round of the tourney.

FIELD HOCKEY

Hartwick 8, Keuka 0 (Saturday)

The Hartwick field hockey team rolled to an 8-0 shutout over Keuka Saturday in the team's Senior Day game.

Holly Calore led the Hawks with three goals in the win while Hope Angioletti scored twice and Julie Ruzzi, Libby Fortin and Ashley Tricarico also scored.

Amanda Klopper made two saves while Ashley Luppens also saw time in goal.

Hartwick (10-5) will host Houghton Thursday to open the Empire 8 Tournament at the number two seed.

SUNY Oneonta 3, RPI 2 (Sunday)

SUNY Oneonta rallied from an early two-goal deficit Sunday to defeat RPI 3-2.

Morgan Fleming scored all three goals for the Red Dragons with her tallies coming in the 21st, 43rd and 49th minutes.

Assists on the goals came from Molly Geyer, Michaela Maniscalco and Alexandra Howell, respectively.

Maura Leib made six saves in goal.

Oneonta finishes the season with a record of 8-10.

VOLLEYBALL

Hartwick 3, Houghton 0 (Saturday)

The Hartwick volleyball team finished its Empire 8 schedule with a straight sets victory over Houghton Saturday by scores of 25-18, 25-19, 25-12.

Leading the way for the Hawks were Kaileigh Brandow (13 kills, six digs), Staecia Silofau (nine kills, four blocks, four digs), Shelby Swartz (six kills), Vanessa Seymour (33 assists, five digs), Niah Reeves (four blocks), Shaelyn Thornton (nine digs) and Sarah Petz (nine digs).

Hartwick (12-9) earned the number two seed in the Empire 8 Tournament and will host a semifinal match Thursday.

Rochester 3, SUNY Oneonta 0 (Saturday)

SUNY Oneonta fell in straight sets to Rochester Saturday by scores of 25-8, 25-15, 25-11.

The Red Dragons' top performers were Autumn Singleton with four kills, Ashanti Davis with four kills, Sophia Gerace with five assists and four digs and Julia Reedy with five digs.

Oneonta (5-19) will host Baruch and Hartwick this Saturday to wrap up its regular season.

FOOTBALL

The Hartwick football team fell behind 35-0 in the first quarter Saturday and never recovered in a 73-7 home loss to SUNY Cortland.

Nate Rath scored the Hawks' only points on a 37-yard reception from James Sobol late in the third quarter.

Rath caught eight passes for 129 yards while Sobol threw for 167 yards with a touchdown and an interception.

Hartwick (1-7) will be at Alfred this Saturday.
