Summerfield's girls pick up a big win; Bedord's Bill Ryan hits 400

PETERSBURG – Summerfield’s girls basketball team badly needed a win Friday night to stay in the Tri-County Conference race.

The Bulldogs responded with their best game of the season to earn a 41-22 win over Lenawee Christian.

“We were relentless on defense,” Summerfield coach Mickey Moody said. “We were pressuring the ball and anticipated really well tonight. This was our best defensive effort of the year against a really good team.”

Bedford 63, Ypsilanti Lincoln 17

TEMPERANCE – Everyone shared in the fun as Bedford girls basketball coach Bill Ryan hit a milestone.

Every player on the active roster scored in an easy victory that gave Ryan 400 career wins (328 girls, 72 boys).

Nyah Mullins led the way with 15 points and Victoria Gray scored 13.

After that, two seniors stole the show. Paige Anderson and Kadie Morse, who had combined for 12 points in Bedford’s first six games, both reached double figures.

Anderson scored 13 points and Morse 10. It was a career high for both players.

The Mules have reeled off six straight wins since dropping their opener.

Dexter 55, Monroe 33

MONROE – Alena Blumberg of Dexter nearly matched the output of Monroe’s entire team, scoring 32 points.

Monroe (4-6) was within 33-24 at halftime, but scored just 9 points in the second half.

“The good thing for us is we have been competing in every game,” Monroe coach Trent Moody said. “The SEC has Bedford, Saline and Dexter all ranked in the state, so getting to play those teams a total of six times a year is the best practice you can get if you want to play at a high level. Our girls have been working hard this year and unfortunately our record doesn’t show truly how good we are.”

Sophia Bussell led Monroe with 21 points.

Whiteford 38, Sand Creek 28

OTTAWA LAKE – Playing a home for the first time in a month did wonders for Whiteford’s defense Friday night.

The Bobcats forced 26 turnovers to snap a three-game losing streak.

“We were able to pressure the ball and create fast break opportunities with some steals,” Whiteford coach Nick Brillhart said.

Emily Rasor had a big night for 5-4 Whiteford with 14 points, 8 rebounds and 6 steals. Emily Hill chipped in with 8 points and 3 steals.

Riverview 62, Huron 48

NEW BOSTON – New Boston Huron fell behind 18-8 in the opening quarter and never recovered.

Lila Clements scored 19 points to lead the 5-4 Chiefs.
