New Summerfield XC: Hornets win district title, Lady Hornets heading to regionals, too

Oct. 12—NEW SUMMERFIELD — New Summerfield's boys came in first place in the team standings at the District 22-2A Cross Country Championships, which took place at the New Summerfield Athletic Complex Wednesday.

The Lady Hornets will also be advancing to the Class 2A, Region III Cross Country Championships, after coming in third place in the team standings.

The regional meet will take place Oct. 23-24 in Huntsville and will be hosted by Sam Houston State University.

New Summerfield's Raul Munoz traveled the moderately hilly course in a time of 17:06 to capture first place in the individual standings for the No.5-ranked Hornets, who are coached by Wesley Stewart.

Also contributing to the team points total for New Summerfield were: Andres Ornelas (17:37), Brayden Leuckenmeyer (18:24), Jovanny Hernandez (18:42) and Alessandro Garcia (19:04).

Bryan Zavala (19:06) and Omar Porras (19:08) also competed for the Hornets.

In the varsity girls division, the Lady Hornets were led by a 12th place finish by Zuliemy Torres, who was timed in 15:55.

Other team members were: Mariana Luna (16:30), Angela Zavala (16:33), Cristal Porras (16:44) and Jamie Suarez (16:42).

Paola Rivera (17:26) and Lisette Miller (18:03) also participated in the run, but did not factor into the team points total.

In the junior varsity races, New Summerfield won first place in the boys division where Brian Vargas came in first place.

The Lady Hornets' JV squad came in third place, with the team's top finish coming from Natalie Melendez, who finished in third place.

Noel Hernandez and Lisandro Arredondo came in first and second, respectively, in the individual standings of the junior high boys segment. New Summerfield won first place in the team standings in the division.

Evee Bragg's third place finish propelled the New Summerfield girls to a second place finish in the team standings of the junior high girls division.
