Summer planner: Where to find Bloomington area youth sports camps

From baseball to volleyball, here's a list of area sports camps hosted at one of our local high schools, Bloomington North, South, Edgewood, Eastern Greene, Owen Valley and Lighthouse Christian:

Baseball

Cougar Baseball Camp

Bloomington North will hold a pair of baseball camps. The first, for current middle school students, will take place June 12-15 from 9 a.m.-noon and the second, for players in grades K-6, will run June 19-22 from 9 a.m.-noon. Emphasis will placed on fundamentals and fun while improving your throwing, catching, fielding and hitting. Participants will play in game competition.

Head coach Richard Hurt will direct the camp along with assistant coaches and North players. T-shirt included, please specify shirt size on the registration form. Players will need to bring a baseball glove, bat, cleats or gym shoes and hat with everything labeled. T-shirts, baseball pants or sweat pants recommended. Cost is $100 or $180 for two children and $255 for three children from the same household. Registration form is available at bloomingtonnorthathletics.com. Jr. Panthers Basketball/Baseball Camp

A combined basketball/baseball camp will take place at Bloomington South on June 26-29. The basketball camp, for boys and girls, will have sessions for players entering grades 6-8 from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. and for those going into grades 3-5 from 1-2:30 p.m.

The baseball camp for players going into grades 3-5 will run from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. and for players going into grades 6-8 from 1-2:30 p.m. Cost is $125 for both camps or $75 for just the basketball or baseball camps. Basketball

Bloomington North Middle School Camp

The Bloomington North basketball camp for boys currently in seventh and eighth grades will run May 31-June 2 from 9-11 a.m. at the BHSN gyms (Door N16). Cost is $100. Coach Jason Speer and the boys’ staff will conduct the camp and will focus on individual skill development through varsity drills. Focus will be on man-to-man defense concepts and fundamentals including shooting, ball handling, and passing techniques. The players will also be introduced to North’s offense and defense, which will better prepare them for their future at the middle and high school levels.

In addition to the camp experience, many players will be asked to participate in a tournament for incoming ninth graders at Martinsville High School June 10-11. Bloomington North Elementary Boys' Basketball Camp

Camp will take place May 23-25 at Bloomington North gyms (door N16). Sessions for any student in grades K-3 this current school year will run from 10-11 a.m. each day. Cost is $50 and includes a camp T-shirt. Sessions for students in grades 4-6 will run from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Cost is $75 and includes a camp T-shirt. Parents are welcome to attend.

North's boys' basketball staff and players will conduct the camp. The camp will focus on individual skill development through a variety of engaging drills and competitions. Focus will include man-to-man defense concepts and basketball fundamentals including shooting, ball handling, and passing. The camp will also reinforce each camper’s teamwork, mental and physical toughness and creating a winning tradition at BHSN in their futures. Future Lady Mustangs Camp

Girls' basketball camp will run July 10-13 at the Edgewood Intermediate School gym. Sessions for players entering grades K-2 will run from 9-10:15 a.m. and for grades 3-5 from 10:30-11:45 a.m. Focus will be on fundamentals: footwork, dribbling, passing, shooting, layups, rebounding and defense. Cost is $40 due on the first day of camp by cash or check payable to Edgewood High School and financial assistance is available. For more information contact coach Gary Sims at gsims@rbbschools.net.

Edgewood boys basketball camps

FUTURE MUSTANGS CAMP: Runs from July 10-13 at Edgewood Intermediate School gym, with sessions for grades 3-5 from 1-2:15 p.m. and grades K-2 from 2:45-4 p.m. Cost is $40. Camp will focus on different aspects of shooting, dribbling and passing with daily shooting and ballhandling drills. Techniques used in 1-on-1, 2-on-1, 3-on-3, etc. will also be taught. Each camp will feature a different contest and awards at the completion of the camp. If possible, campers should bring a 28.5 inch diameter basketball with their name on the ball.

JUNIOR HIGH CAMP: Runs June 5-6, 12-13 and 19-20 at Edgewood High School from 3-5 p.m. each day for players in grades 6-8. Cost is $60. Camp will reinforce the fundamental skills needed to be successful at the junior high level. Players will be introduced to the drills they will see throughout the Edgewood basketball program and the principles of executing fast break and half-court offense and man defense will be covered. Players will compete in team competition with awards at the end of camp.

SUPER HOOPS TEAM CAMP: Runs July 14-16 at Indiana Wesleyan University, with practice at Edgewood July 10-11, 13 from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Parent meeting will take place July 11 from 6:30-6:45 p.m. Cost is $265 and includes dorm and food. Edgewood is looking for players who see themselves as a Mustang basketball player in high school. Team roster is limited to 8-9 players and a player's skill level and attitude will be a factor in selection. The coaching staff will use the June camp to evaluate players and priority will be given to members of last year's travel and school teams. The high school coaching staff will chaperone the trip and transportation will be provided.

Bloomington South Girls Basketball Camps

Middle school camp for players ages 11-14 will run May 24-25 from 10:30 a.m.-noon. while elementary school camp for players ages 6-10 will run June 13-15 from 10-11:30 a.m. Fee for each camp is $25, includes a T-shirt and will be paid on the first day of camp. Soccer

Goalkeeper and Finishing Camp

Camp will run May 30-June 2 at Bloomington South with sessions for boys and girls 8-12 and 13-18, with part-time and all-day options. The camp offers professional training for all players of any skill level. The design is a fun but challenging age appropriate environment aimed at player development. Each camper receives a goalkeeper glove bag or a field player shoe bag and camp t-shirt. Goalkeepers: Sessions for ages 8-12 run from 2:30-4:30 p.m. and fee is $150. Sessions for ages 13-18 are from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. (with break from 11-12), fee is $299. A full-day session for ages 10-18 will run from 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. (breaks at 11-12 and 2-2:30), fee is $425. Field players: Campers will be grouped by age and skill level. Fee is $125 for the age 8-12 or 13-18 camps or $175 for the full-day camp. South soccer camps

TEAM CAMP: Sessions will take place July 24-26 at Bloomington South from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. each day. It is an intensive camp which will combine technical/tactical training, strength and conditioning, and scrimmaging. Our camp features outstanding coaching from Kevin Sparks and South's staff which will prepare you for the challenges of high school soccer. Players will be required to stay on site throughout the day. Lunch will be provided on the 26th. The camp is open to all high school aged players. Cost is $150 and all players must have a current IHSAA physical.

PANTHER YOUTH CAMP: Camp will run July 27-28 frim 9 a.m.-1 p.m. each day and is open to boys and girls age 5-13. It will provide a fun and safe learning environment where players will develop the necessary skills to become better soccer players. Our experienced coaching staff will lead age appropriate activities while teaching players through demonstration and coaching within the game. Campers will have the opportunity to meet and work with current players from both the boys’ and girls’ teams. Cost is $50 with a $5 for each additional child. Players should bring ball, shin guards and water. Boys coach Corbin Calvert and JV coach Jake Kabrick will lead the camp.

North youth soccer camp

Camp will run June 26-28 at the Bloomington North football field and is for boys and girls age 8-14. Sessions will run from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. North's coaching staff will lead age-appropriate activities while teaching players through demonstration and coaching during sessions. Campers will have the opportunity to meet and work with current players from both the boys and girls high school teams. An IU soccer player is scheduled to make an appearance as well. Tennis

MC Tennis camps

MIDDLE SCHOOL AND HIGH SCHOOL CLINICS: These clinics are offered on summer mornings from 8:30-10 a.m., four days per week. They are offered in a drop-in format, so you only pay for the clinics you plan to attend. These clinics go beyond fundamentals and are focused on preparing players for competitive match play. Beginners are welcome, as players get divided based on skill level. These clinics are open to all players ages 10-18 regardless of the high school they plan to attend.

ALL AGES CLINICS: These clinics (for ages 5+) are offered on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings all summer. Our clinics utilize USTA curriculum and are best suited for beginning and intermediate players. The adult and youth sessions are offered at the same time, so families can come and participate in clinics together! Participants are divided into small groups based on age and skill level.

Volleyball

Bloomington North Camps

TOTAL SKILLS CAMP: Runs June 19-22, 10-noon each day, with sessions for incoming first-sixth graders ($60) and, incoming seventh and eighth graders ($80). Camp is for boys and girls of all experience levels. Focus will be on movement and overall skills development while providing constant opportunities to improve, compete and have a lot of fun! Seventh-eighth grade camp includes a tournament on the last day.

NINTH GRADE ELITE CAMP: Runs June 19-22 (9-noon), June 23 (10-noon). Cost is $100 (positions limited). Prepares incoming freshman for all aspects of high school level volleyball: development of fundamental movements, familiarity with and tactical considerations of team offensive and defensive systems, position specific training, being successful out-of-system, and receiving and applying feedback to your learning process. We will also discuss maintaining balanced health and conditioning within the demanding schedule of a high school student athlete, Our staff will coach you on ways of creating individual tandem goals and how to correctly connect those goals to our training. Server’s Challenge & Camp Tournament play on Friday!

POSITION CAMPS: June 23rd, 9-10 a.m. Cost is $20 and is open to any seventh-ninth graders who attended the regular camp sessions. Setter speed session will attack the setting position through intensive, specialized drill instruction. Emphasis on efficient court mobility through footwork patterns and team management skills. Learn how to maximize quality reps in small amounts of time, be proactive with the second ball in and out of system, and understand the demands of being an efficient and effective setter. Libero session will feature high-volume reps aimed at improving the libero “toolbox.” Emphasis on backrow vision and speed training. Aspiring and advanced liberos will all benefit from this fast-paced session.
